An extraordinary story I can finally tell
My best friend and his wife want to have a child more than they want anything. They have been married for a while now, they have a nice house, and they make a tall six figures between them, so they are well-placed to have a kid. My friend is like me - only child of a single mom who raised him after a divorce - which makes him want to have a child AND RAISE THE CHILD. Fathers are in scarce supply in both our lines.

His wife got pregnant last summer. We celebrated quietly, and waited for that three-month finish line. She got to the three month finish line, and went to the doctor, and the doctor told her there was no heartbeat. The baby was gone.

They discovered, then, one of the little-spoken secrets. One in five pregnancies end in miscarriage, said misacrriage coming within the first three months. The unspoken rule is that you don't announce anything until three months are gone. I didn't know that, and neither did they. So they tried again, after a period of physical and emotional recovery.

His wife got pregnant again. We celebrated quietly, and waited for that three-month finish line. She got to the three month finish line, and went to the doctor, and the doctor told her there was no heartbeat. The baby was gone. Again.

Imagine. Twice. Another summer was upon us, and my friend's wife was...I can't even begin to explain. You can understand. They decided to have themselves a 'fun' summer; they had a hot tub installed outside their house, and threw a few parties. She had a nice bellyful of driniking, after a year of nothing because she had either been trying to get pregnant, been pregnant, or been getting over the end of a pregnancy.

But it wasn't a fun summer.

My friend called me two weeks ago. His wife was pregnant again. He hadn't told a soul, and it was a week until the three-month deadline. He needed to talk, and so we talked. I prayed.

His wife is fine, and remains healthy and very pregnant. The three-month barrier was passed with flying colors. She's OK, and so is he.

So am I.

5. Let's hope the third one is the charmed one
What a terrible story. Can't imagine how devestating that would be to miscarriage twice like that.

6. Third time is the charm.
The triplets' mother did not get pregnant until her third try with in vitro fertilization. And she ended up with three in one blow. But now that the trips are three years old, it is all in the past -- as it will be for your friends. Good luck to them.

7. Thanks Will
Great story. Infertility runs in my wife's family - her sister just had a baby after years of trying and two miscarriges. My SO had a miscarriage of twins before I came in the pic. Its a living hell for those who go through - and those who are close to them.

:toast: to their good fortune!

14. Continued good wishes for your friends
It sounds like they're very ready to become parents and will do an excellant job. I had a miscarriage once at 12 weeks. Worst experience of my life. :(

However, here's to continued health and happiness and to the next generation! :toast:

19. My wife had a miscarraige first
When their baby is born, your friends will understand why this has happened to them. If my wife hadn't miscarried, we would not have my beautiful son. Sure, we might have another kid that we would have loved, but he would not have been Kevin.

It sounds bizarre, but I am so thankful that our first attempt did not make it.

22. Congrats to the expecting couple!!
Doesn't it suck how people who can afford to have babies can't, and those that don't want them or beat the crap out of them and neglect them can? It's so annoying and wrong.

Feel free to have her ask any questions about the pregnancy and pass them along to me. I'll try to have the neonatologists I work with answer them for her.

28. Outstanding!
While we can never fully understand why things happen the way they do, I always think that with a little faith and a little hope, you make it through the tough times and then it all becomes clear.

My best to you and your friends, keep us posted!!!
