Darren Wright doesn't think of himself as a threat to national security. But the Greenville computer consultant and a few thousand sport rocket hobbyists around the country have come under increased scrutiny from the federal government since the September 2001 terrorist attacks.
He and other rocketeers are lobbying Congress to pass a bill easing restrictions in a homeland security law that took effect in May that they say unnecessarily clamps down on their sport. Nationally, about 18,000 people belong to the country's two major sport rocketry groups, Tripoli and the National Association of Rocketry. About 150 belong to the Maryland-Delaware Rocketry Association.
"It's a case of the government going completely overboard on homeland security," Wright said.
The new rules restrict access to some of the chemicals that hobbyists use to fuel their rockets, require more fuel-storage safeguards and limit their ability to buy the black powder used to separate rocket nose cones so they can parachute safely to the ground. Hobbyists contend the materials pose little threat of misuse as explosives. >>>>>>more<<<<<<<
