"Mommy, this movie has beer and cuss words in it!!!!"

My daughter came shooting out of my bedroom where she and her brother were watching Antz. I've seen the movie, didn't see a big deal. She was jumping out her skin over it. She went back in and told her brother that I said the channel had to be changed, he knew better (I'd already given permission for the show).

He got bored with it, and left the room. She came out and said "Mommy, can I change the channel now? The cussing and the beer made me really uncomfortable." She's happily watching something else now.

Where did THIS come from?

My parents are fundies, but they know that if they push religion on my kids there will be consequences. My son would just explain Evolution to them, but my daughter just might bite.

A kid at school told her that she would go to hell if she didn't pray and go to church.

Then went to the teacher and told her to make it stop. Of course, they can't control every word that comes out of a kid's mouth, but the kid can be told to knock it off.

let her know what _you_ think about Hell and if it exists and who goes there? (I am guessing that you did but am curious as to what you said.)

I explained to her that some people believe in God and Heaven and Hell, but that other people don't believe those things. I won't tell her church is a bad place, some churches are just fine. She can make her own decision when she's old enough to do so. I had it crammed down my throat as a kid in a household where you were not allowed to question. She's free to make her own choice, when she's ready to make that choice.

Hubby has tried to forbid me telling the kids my version of our faith, but fat lot of good that's gonna do him. If they have questions, I will answer them. If I see them getting sucked into Fundieville, I will head them off at the pass.

"That's not true", but I just say that different people believe different things.

In the school in western VA a friend attended, it was the teachers who told her she would go to hell for being a *gasp* Unitarian.

Unless my daughter just quit telling me about it.

Can your parents be pushing the religion on them while you're not present? A good friend and her hubby have had to make the decision that their son will not have ANY unsupervised visits with his parents because of his mother's behavior with the older grandchildren: telling them how if they didn't go to church they'd be bound for hell and then describing in detail what a horrible experience it would be, all while their mother was not around. And telling them not to tell their mommy because it was their secret with grandma. (My friend's husband was present when this was happening.) Then there's the issue of granddad being a virulent racist and homophobe, but that's another story.

My son doesn't play that. Of course, any time one of my kids has a problem, my parents inform me that if they were in church, all would be well. Tough shit!

Know they can talk to you about these things. I salute you NGU!

Public school in Texas....

I know here in Ga. my grandchildren are taught that BAD WORDS are stupid, dumb, and idiot! They are always telling me "Grandma, you just said a BAD word!" All I was talking about was some dumb Pub diea, but when I said dumb, I was sooo very bad!

I understand why they're teaching them that. I'm sure it's to teach them not to call each other names like that, and that's a good thing. They are in 1st and 3rd grades, so I'm sure it will advance to "beer & other bad words" in a year or so.

Of course, as far as my eleven year old son is concerned "thing" is a naughty word. Evertime someone says "thing", he goes "Oooooooh, you said THING!" Ah, the things his friends teach him!

EVERYONE smoked.. In the bathtub, at work, in bed...everywhere..

These days, people go crazy when they even see a "star" sneaking a cigarette, and LTTE abound when a "role model" smokes in a movie..

All vending machines and deep fryers were removed from the school district. Texas schools had to do it to keep federal funding. They're also spending a lot of time teaching the kids about how to eat healthy.

I had my first beer when I was 2 years old. My mom and older brother and I went to live with my grandmother while my dad was stationed in the Philippines.

My mom's much younger sister was still living at home, and her boyfriend/fiance (later husband) came to visit quite often. One night he left a beer on the coffee table while he went out to the kitchen to go get a glass.

When he came back it was gone, and I had the hiccups. They put 2 and 2 together. They told me about this years later. And my dad always let me have sip of his beer when he had some because I liked it.

My parents were always very cool about giving me minute amounts of liquor (a glass of wine with dinner for instance) because they'd lived in Italy, where it was commonplace.

My mom always wanted me to know my limits, so when I got older boys wouldn't be able to "take advantage of me."

Their strategy worked. I've always indulged in moderate amounts, but never abused alcohol.

I remember when she was four, I took her to the mall for new shoes. She had a blast in Payless, then told EVERYONE we passed in the mall "I got new shoes!!" as she proudly carried her bag. You'd think she'd never had new shoes before.

Now you know why I never had kids! I've heard that whatever it was that you did, your kids will be ten times worse. I couldn't HANDLE that.

At the time they weren't so funny. To make things worse, my son is an Aspie. He doesn't get that there are some things you just don't yell in public.
