Jeter played World Series while hurt

NEW YORK -- Derek Jeter played the AL championship series and the World Series with a ruptured tendon in his left thumb.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman made the disclosure Tuesday after the team's news conference to announce Don Mattingly's return as hitting coach.

Cashman said the team will wait about two more weeks to determine whether the tendon, injured in the opener of the series against the Boston Red Sox, can heal with about three weeks of rest. If it doesn't, it would require surgery.

"We've just got to do some more tests, we'll see,'' Jeter said.

(snip)

In other news, the Yankees declined David Wells' $6 million option but said they have not decided whether they want the 40-year-old left-hander back next season. Cashman also said left-hander Felix Heredia declined his $1.7 million option.

2. The Yankees best days are behind them
They will finish a few games over .500 and slip into the bottom of the division the next season. They can rot in the cellar for all of eternity for all I care.

4. Right
Not going to happen. The AL East is too weak for that too happen..fer chrissake the Devil Rays and O's are terrible! Jays got off to a good start last season, but collapsed by the All-Star break.
The only competition will come from Boston. These two teams are posed to battle each other for AL East crown for many years to come...the Hatred has been renewed.
BTW-
Can we give some props to DJ? He wouldn't sit down if he had a severed head- he'd look around for it and still play. No one gives more than DJ, he's not as good as ARod (IMO, Nomar and DJ are equal in skill), but DJ has that extra something that makes him flat out GREAT.

10. "Can we give some props to DJ"

No Doubt !!!! he played despite being hurt (shoulder, wrist) all season long not just in the playoffs......he's a leader, a great competitor and has that old school mentality...that's why he's Captain of the team despite his young age......and even though he already has 4 world series rings no one was more upset than him about losing the world series this year..... DJ is da man !!!!

5. That's Been Said Before
People are always announcing that the Yankees' glory days are over, and sometimes they're right. But somehow the Yankees remain the team to beat.

Red Sox front office didn't help themselves in firing the manager after a great season. Big deal, he choked in the championship series, and made some bad decisions. Torre didn't choke, but his players sure did. It's part of baseball.

6. Well, word is the Sox were going to fire him regardless of the PS
...I think it's BS.
Liddle was just the sacrificial lamb to offer to enraged/maniac depressed Red Sox Nation.
Liddle made some bad moves during the season, but Torre did as well. In fact, Torre's weakness is his handling of the bullpen- he just does NOT know when to pull the starter and put X reliever in a given situation...
Liddle was decent, and I think he should've been retained. A lot of manages would have left Pedro in- he's their man to go to, the leader of the staff.
Not that I care or anything...

In the long run, Boston firing Little will prove to be a mistake but as you said....who cares........

8. Some of us...
..take a break from reality by watching sports. Take a chill pill...none of us place sports higher than the real world- sometimes reality is too harsh, and in order to keep our sanity, we need a break. Sports can be that break.

12. About Boomer...............

Not picking up his option is probably the best move.....Yanks have to start thinking about building a younger pitching rotation.....right now the starters for next year are Mussina, Lieber, Contreras and Leave It To Weaver, not a pretty picture to say the least...........First move that has to be made is resigning Pettitte..........
