1. You need to take lessons from Paula Zahn...
..on how to be a FULL-FLEDGED Bush whore rather than a half-assed one!

8. Yes, Candy
is a Bush whore, bigtime. Fox must be dying to hire her.
Most times she looks like she could use a shower.

3. she probably doesn't need to be reminded
I'm sure the CNN brass "gently" mention it every 12 hours or so. She's probably horribly tormented about it... but, well - you gotta spend those mediawhore checks somehow... and strawberry cheesecake icecream IS rather good...

4. I'm glad she's on...
I don't agree with her politics, but it's nice to see an older big woman on tv instead of the usual poofed up Barbie Dolls...

6. Hey Candy theTwilight Zone called the Pig People are missing you!
Do you remember the episode with Elly Mae Clampet that had her as an ugly person and the pig people were the good looking ones.

Well, Candy is one of the pig people and all you have to do is look at her NOSE.

10. Wow, I can't imagine calling anyone a "pig person"
I don't think anyone's outward appearance should be the issue.

Slam someone for their reporting or their beliefs but to call her a "pig person"?

I think it's terrific that there's someone on tv who doesn't fit the Barbie Doll image of a woman.

that you have dealt with in your own life, corarose, I certainly would expect you to be more empathetic. Please don't jump at the chance to be the bully.

You sir, are a puppy hater. Really, I thought the people at DU were above all the puppy bashing, but I see the maturity level here has really has taken a nose dive.

Shame on you.

9. I have no problem with any journalist's or reporter's weight
In Candy Crowley's case I find her inability to analyze the "news" honestly to be her hindrance. I actually admire her for not getting a nose job, tummy tuck and having hair that is not so coiffed. Give me a heavy woman any day delivering the news over a botoxed, breast-implanted, Mannequin. Focusing on style over substance is a major part of what is wrong with the "news."

12. I object to your comment for several reasons
First, I'm sure there are a number of DUers who have or are struggling with weight issues. If I were one of them, I certainly wouldn't appreciate the mean-spiritedness of this post. It is cruel and on par with a playground taunt. Do you make fun of overweight people to their faces as well? I wish some posters would realize insensitive comments like these hurtful to your fellow DUers.

The second reason has to deal with sexism. As pointed out by other posters on the thread, there is a tendency to criticize a women's looks when one finds fault with their actions and beliefs. Is your primary problem with Candy that she is overweight? Probably not. However, I guess the best way to stick it to a woman is to criticize her looks.

For further reading on how body image stereotypes are reinforced and the physical and emotional toll this takes on girls and women, look here:

About-Face facts on BODY IMAGE
Compiled by Liz Dittrich, Ph.D.
Interesting Fact: In 1920, women attained the right to vote. This was also the first year of the Miss America Pageant. (Source: WAC STATS: Facts about women).

Prevalence
A poll conducted by a popular women's magazine found that 75% of women thought they were "too fat" (Glamour,1984). A large scale survey conducted by Garner (1997) found body dissatisfaction to be "increasing at a faster rate than ever before" among both men and women (p. 34). He found that 89% of the 3,452 female respondents wanted to lose weight.

Many women suffer from body dissatisfaction, and assiduous dieting and the relentless pursuit of thinness has become a normative behavior among women in Western society (Rodin, Silberstein & Striegel-Moore,1984). Thinness has not only come to represent attractiveness, but also has come to symbolize success, self-control and higher socioeconomic status. Marketdata Enterprises, Inc. estimated the size of the weight loss industry for 1994 at $32,680 billion.

About-Face facts on the MEDIA
Compiled by Liz Dittrich, Ph.D.
The media promotes and reflects the current mainstream culture's standards for body shape or size and importance of beauty. The media reflect images of thinness and link this image to other symbols of prestige, happiness, love and success for women. Repeated exposure to the thin ideal via the various media can lead to the internalization of this ideal. It also renders these images achievable and real. Until women are confronted with their own mirror images they will continue to measure themselves against an inhuman ideal. http://www.about-face.org/r/facts/media.html

16. I Agree With You. --- But now you've got me wondering...
... have we been too harsh on Laura Bush regarding her fashion disasters and lack of good taste and color/pattern coordination?

I've always said that on anyone else, her look would be perfectly acceptable... but it's WRONG for her and WRONG for her position as appointed First Lady.

18. I don't participate in those threads either
But I do see somewhat of a distinction. Fashion styles can be changed much easier. Criticizing people on their looks really is more unfair cause it can be much more expensive and harder to change. Clothing is an outer skin. Body types and appearances cut into your identity.

I'm not trying to be the P.C. police here. I just wanted to point out the impact that words can have, even in jest. Posters are free to take it or leave it.

13. Three cheers for roughsatori, prolesunited,
...and a few of the other good folks on this thread.

I don't want to go into a wild-eyed "fat power" tirade, but get off our backs. If her ample proportions disgust and horrify you to that extent, change the channel. There are bushels of stringbeans with the figure of 14-year old boys all across the dial if that's what you prefer.

I am a fat woman. I've always been fat. I spent nearly 20 years trying to change, yet I stayed fat and, in fact, got fatter. The amount of garbage I've had to take for it throughout my life, usually from people who have far worse flaws than being heavy, almost defies belief. I won't even start on the emotional and psychological problems I have had to deal with. Suffice it to say that I immediately took a liking to Candy Crowley, though it reflects some idea of how things are that I assumed she was an emergency replacement for the regular personality who had been unable to make it that day. It felt really good to see her on screen, although I was a little depressed at the thought that she'd probably never be on again.

Sadly, my feelings of solidarity have since been eroded by subsequent instances of her "reportage". She's truly a groundbreaker and I wish she had set a better example.

Françoise (who is fat and loves it)

15. Just my two cents
It seems to me that focusing on superficial, outward 'appearances' is the biggest reason why so many people in this country think the idiot in the White House is damned near the second coming.
Candy Crowley is certainly a right wing whore, but to slam someone simply for the way they look is just so......republican.

I say dress her up in leather, high heels, and give her a whip. She missed her true career calling. I'll bet millions of right winger men would love to be kept in check by Candy.

23. My Advice To Her Would Be To Go Back & . . .
. . .reread some of those textbooks from the journalism classes she took in college.

Maybe that will refresh in her mind the difference between reportage, analysis, and propaganda.
