just had an interesting converation...
there was an air force wife whose hsband is stationed at NATO. I told her,"i hope you can represent us better than * and the gang are", and she just went OFF! "You don''t know how good we have it in the states, why don't you be more patriotic?" my simple reply was," becuase I never swore allegiance to Halliburton"

You'd think that one of the very few Americans at NATO would be open minded, not this love it or leave the states sheeple mentality. Perhaps military families are being "advised" not to say a word about current events, huh?

2. You probably hit the right nerve.
If her ol' man is at NATO it might be he's jockeying for a position at Haliburton after retirement.

4. Back during the Reagan years
They didn't much like it if military families commented on such things. It wasn't 'the rules' mind you, but the theory was that the active duty military person was government property, and wasn't entitled to an opinion other than whether or not s/he wanted cream in his/her coffee in the morning or not. The implication was 'Reagan is your great leader, and if you're not going to bow down and kiss the hem of his robe, keep your trap shut until you/your spouse is no longer government property.'

For that matter, it may actually have been in the written rules, I just don't remember ever seeing anything explicit in print about criticizing the government/leadership on your watch. Maybe it is.

My hubby was a lowly airman, and I knew he wasn't looking for a career, so I didn't worry about my smart mouth too much. He didn't worry about his, either, nor did the other guys who served with him who didn't think too much of King Ron. But it's easy to understand how somebody who's married to somebody higher profile would feel compelled to toe the line. Spouses of military members have my great sympathy. It ain't easy in a time of relative peace -- I know, from reading posts here from spouses of military members that it's incredibly difficult to deal with, the way things are now.

7. There are very strict regulations
for military personnel concerning verbal or written comments about the president, senators, and congressmen - also governors if you're in the National Guard. Also, spouses can have great effect upon the careers of military members. I saw several officer promotionboards that got down to the wire and considered the spouse when making final determinations on promotions. The higher the rank, the more the spouse's actions figured in.

As an aside, you say the person is stationed at NATO. Where? Belgium, an affiliated NATO facility? Saying that someone is stationed at NATO is akin to saying that someone works for K-Mart. Many locations to choose from.
