I'm okay, the doc says it probably WAS the Atkins diet.
I called my doctor after posting my thread last night and he said to come right in. I told him what was happening, he did the usual doctor probe-pinch-and-test stuff, then said, as many of you did in my thread, that it was most likely because I was in ketosis from the Atkins diet.

He said to try to eat every couple of hours, and to grab some carbs or sugars if it happens again. He's also sending me to a cardiologist, because of some of my symptoms and because I have a mitral valve prolapse and something called Abnormal Chronotropic Response which is fancy medicalese for the heart speeding up much faster than it should with most activity (good thing I haven't gotten lucky then for awhile, lol)!

But for now, I'm okay, I went home and ate right away then rested and I feel a lot better. He warned me that it would probably happen again, since it's only been a couple of days since I started Atkins and my body's still trying to get used to it. He said by next week I should be feeling not only a lot better, but much more energetic. I hope so!

Thanks so much to all of you who posted with suggestions, ideas, and expressions of concern, I really appreciate it. You guys are the best!

1. Yup
this is why I tell everyone on Atkins to maintain a constant intake of energy suppliments (creatine etc) and liquid vitamins.

Glad to hear you're okay now.

2. Thanks for checking in
:D Glad you are doing better. :hi:

Sounds like you might do better to wean yourself more slowly from the refined sugars and flours than the diet recommends. It's all good.

As for the racing heartbeat. I get that if I let my cardiac conditioning slide. With MVP its doubly important to keep up exercise conditioning.

12. That's a great suggestion
This is my second time for Atkins (the diet work, I moved, stressed on my job and ate like you wouldn't imagine - so it wasn't the diet to blame).

I remember how miserable I felt when I started the induction phase of Atkins so this time I had a pre-induction week where I reduced the amount of carbs but not necessarily cut them out. If I cheated it was ok, but I was more conscious of it.

It worked like a charm. Induction was a breeze this time!!!

5. That's good news.. I have had mitral valve prolapse for 20 yrs
and other than a racinig heart sometimes, and occasional empty?lightheadedness , it's no biggie.. My cardiologist said it's very common for 30ish women to have this.. Of course I am no longer 30ish...but...

Now that the stress of not knowing has gone, you will probably be your old self in no time :)

8. Glad to hear
that you're ok. And thanks for posting--it serves as a bit of a warning for me. I started the South Beach Diet this week, and the first couple of weeks are very much like Atkins, so if the same thing happens to me I'll know what it is.

9. Glad you're Okay, liberalhistorian!
I didn't see your thread last night but in the past I have tried to warn people about the "atkins diet"..no one wants to hear it, though, so I usually just keep my mouth shut now.

IMO, it is a dangerous diet ..I was on it in the '70's for about a week.
From my experience we should eat a balanced diet of fresh Organic vegetables, fruits, grains, beans and whatever protein your body can handle as a way of life and the pounds melt off with daily exercise.

11. With the MVP, you need to make sure blood sugar doesn't
fall too much; it's a quick road to a fatal heart attack. Even as an insulin dependenet diabetic, I can't let mine slip below 100. The resulting hypoglycemia could easily trigger a heart attack (I'm only 44) that would more than likely be fatal.

Take care--glad you're OK.
