110 degrees?!?
with the "heat index"...sort of like the wind chill factor, but in reverse.

So, how hot is it in your neck of the woods?

"Heat Advisory for this Afternoon!

Partly cloudy skies with afternoon storms scattered across the area. Highs in the mid 90's. The heat index will be between 105-110. SW 5-10 mph.

The rest of the week looks very hot and humid with the typical afternoon thunderstorms for some but not all of the area."

28. Was it Twain who said the coldest he's ever been is August in San Fran?
It's awful today in Detroit, 95+ and 95% humidity. The air is so thick. I am glad to have a/c at home and in the car.

31. Misattributed Quote
Yeah, I thought it was too, until google slapped me down:

http://www.boondocksnet.com/twaintexts/quotes_not_twain.html

"The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco"

Apparently he never wrote this.

11. Ditto
Got to the office this morning in a certain town in the Madera county foothills and it was so gross I had to turn the AC on right away. It usually doesn't go on until at least 11.

Looks like another afternoon swim today at my son's place to cool off. I remember the summer of '71 here when temps hit over 120 degrees and the streets were literally melting.

15. I went camping in 105 degree heat this past weekend.
Not a "heat index" 105, but an actual 105 on the mercury...using most heat index charts, it was the equivalent of 108. Here's an interesting reality about high heat: Your body actually does MUCH better in it if you're exposed to it all day. Being outside (albeit, in the shade) from sunrise to sunset gives your body time to adapt to the temperature and dramatically reduces the impact of that temperature on your body. 100 feels like 90, 90 feels like 80, etc.

The problem that many people have nowadays is that we go from our fan and air conditioned temperature controlled homes to roaring infernos in seconds, which doesn't give the body time to adapt. If your body is attuned to a comfortable 79 degrees and you suddenly walk into 101 degree outdoor weather, the shock on the system as it tries to cope is actually more stressful than the 101 degree weather itself.

Humans evolved on the arid plains of central Africa, so our bodies are naturally designed to function well in extremely hot environments. Our problems with heat stem entirely from our dependence on modern "conveniences" and our insistence on wearing outergarments that are completely inappropriate for the weather. We've forgotten how to live with nature, and are suffering for it today.

26. 90 degrees in Houston, heat index of 100.
That's actually fairly cool for Houston in July.

The heat started early this year & June was the dryest on record--ever. Rain began in early July & hasn't stopped. There was minor flooding last week.

32. Yes, and it will be that hot for another 4 months
I know I should have some sympathy for our northern friends who are so unaccustomed to this kind of heat, but it's hard to muster when we know that they'll be back to their more normal cooler climes very soon. Perhaps if I'm nice now we'll be able to get some sympathy when we're still dealing with heat indeces of 100 in November? :)

But perhaps you could call them in December. Just let them know you spent the afternoon on a nice restaurant patio--drinking margaritas.

Edited to add: Hearing thunder now. More rain is on the way.

Having lived in Davis for six years, I know that heat can be brutal, but at least it's usually a pretty dry heat.
