What to do?
Eat the tuna to avoid Alzheimer's?
Or not eat the tuna to avoid brain damage from mercury?
It ain't easy getting old.
:-(

A study of 150 Irish Alzheimer's sufferers has found that their brains have
half the normal level of DHA, a fatty acid essential for a normal nervous
system. The dietary sources of DHA are oily fish such as salmon, tuna,
mackerel, herring and sardines, and cod-liver oil. Crude tuna oil contains
levels of 22%- to 24% of DHA.

Is there such a thing as healthy mercury?

They have issued repeated warnings on the consumption of various fish, including tuna, shark, swordfish, and mahi-mahi, because of possible mercury contamination. And since mercury is particularly harmful to nerve cells, government health authorities have stressed that infants and small children shouldn't be fed these foods, and pregnant and nursing mothers should avoid eating tuna also.

1. How about...
you eat salmon? It has the DHA that you want, and it isn't on the list of fishes with mercury poisoning...

2. Yes, salmon is good. You could also take DHA supplements
Most dieticians say eating fish 2-3x/week for a healthy adult is probably ok.

You can find DHA/DHEA at the vitamin store. Ditto Omega-3 capsules, if you're really concerned about getting mercury poisoning.

7. I learned a trick w/the Omega-3 capsules that really works.
Like you I want the benefits of the good oils withouth the mercury risk so I bought the fish-oil capsules but even taking one gives me an upset stomach and "fishy burps," and the bottle recommends 3 capsules a day. A friend w/a degree in sports medicine says to keep the capsules in the freezer, something about chilling them makes them easier on the stomach.

I can't explain the science behind it but I tried it and it worked for me!

3. Avoid the tuna,
just read a lot to stave off Alzheimer's. But maybe LBN rather than the Lounge. :)

Seriously, I've heard aluminum is a contributing factor...so plastic soda bottles are better than cans. Water's even better, of course.

6. Nature magazine has an article out about
tuna, cod and halibut fish threatened with extinction from over-fishing....(Canadian and German scientists)

I also have been eating more fish, but when I read articles like this one.....I start wondering again what is safest and the best to eat?
