Low Carb Update
Hey DU low carb people, how are you all doing? I noticed at the grocery store there are more low carb products being made, low carb klondik ice cream bars, breyers, chocolate, russel stovers....

Anyone else hear of any new low carb products?

BTW - I've gone from woman's size 11 to size 5 in 3 months on the Atkins diet, so if you think low carb diets don't work then do you want my old jeans that fall off of me?

1. There is a ton of stuff out there....
The new Le Carb low carb ice cream is great and I heard that Bryers has one out as well.

There's this great brand of cookies that my Shop-Rite has recently started selling.

And there has always been a ton of great low carb candy out there.

I'm at 43 lbs. lost since March and gone from a size waist to a size 32.

2. Arnold's breads has a line of low carb breads I saw
they looked good. If I can have a slice of bread once in a while I might try it - my friend is on South Beach. But I just gave up booze so I figure one giant lifestyle change at a time.

Let me know when rice noodles are low in carb and then I'll take the plunge. I'm addicted to Pho, Pad Thai and stuff like that.

6. Are the Arnold's breads
any good? I might try them if they are.

I've tried some of the bread mixes but their texture is offputting to me. I just wait and have the real thing... sparingly.

7. The Arnolds breads are really good and much better...
Than the bread mixes I've tried. I recommend the Arnold's breads.

15. If you have Whole Foods (natural) Groceries near you..
They have a brand of low carb bread in their frozen bread department that I like a lot. I just ran out so I can't check the label for the name, but you'll find it.

16. Is it Irene's Gluten Bread?
I know that's the most popular low carb bread at the health food store where I work.

17. I've seen Irene's
in the case, but never looked at it close enough bother. Will check it out next time I'm in Wellspring...er.. Whole Foods. I liked our local name so much better. WF is so generic.

23. Lo Carb bread made by "Foods for Life" in blue labeled bag
at Whole Foods.... It is really popular here at Denver Stores. It flies off the regrigerator shelf.

3. If you limit your calorie intake and exercise,
you can lose weight off of almost anything for at least a while.

I don't know how long you plan to stay on that diet, but you might want to get your kidneys, blood calcium level, and bone density checked out if you stay on it for long.

4. Doing good
I'm back on induction after too many carbs recently. But it's fine.

If you check out GNC stores or other health/vitamin places, there is a plethora of low-carb products. The Atkins Indulge line ice cream is supposedly to die for. :9 I'll have to try it soon.

There is one flax, soy protien mix that is a great hot cereal/oatmeal substitute for in the morning. And it's a nice change from eggs everyday.

5. Started Atkins in August
But I'm one of those stubborn metabolically resistant types. The weight is very slow to come off, (5 lbs the first week on induction, 3 the next - and about 10 since) but I've lost inches.

Yes, tons of low carb everything. Have enjoyed Junior's no sugar, low carb cheesecake - fabulous! Breyer's Carb Smart ice cream is pretty good, as well. There is also low carb pasta, tortillas, and a host of other items. Just shop around, even on the web you can find some good things.

Just saw my doctor 2 weeks ago for blood work. Triglycerides dropped 22 points and the cholestorol was the lowest it's ever been. Doctor believes Atkins works for overall health and recomended I stay with it. I enjoy it for the most part...just wish I could see more pounds off, though!

Congratulations to you - and here's to your good health, as well.

8. If you're metabolically resisitant...
you might consider a different diet. I've lost 115 pounds since January of 2002 and my diet is almost the exact opposite of Atkins. Proportionally I get a lot of carbs (though in total it isn't a lot because I have a very low daily caloric intake). I just burn all those carbs off at the gym.

Really I did it the old fashioned way - burn more calories than you consume. Find a way of eating and exercising that works with your metabolism.

22. When it got "slow" for me
I had a carb day and then went back. For some reason that worked to jump start it.

9. Been lo carb for near four years
lost more than eighty pounds--and keeping my blood sugar under control using Dr. Bernstein. Sometimes I do Atkins -- just bought "Atkins for Life" where there are meal plans and menus.

I can eat Atkins bread and the muffins, and the hi lo buns without much havoc on the blood sugars. Things with maltitol or sugar alcohols are iffy--I can have an occasional chocolate bar. I was surprised, but almost all of the health food stores that I have been in in my travels about the state, are now carrying Atkins products, lo carb cereals, and a large variety of lo carb products. My supermarket is also carrying lo carb items.

I heard the Breyers is coming out with a lo carb ice cream and have requested that the super market stock this item. Also great is a soymilk called Soy Slender--comes in vanilla, chocholate, and cappacino--it is sweetened with splenda and has only one carb per 8oz, after subracting the fiber. The Cappacino is very good.

I fell off the wagon for six months and gained back twenty pounds--without eating a single grain of sugar, a single potato, bread, pasta or anything forbidden--but I was eating a whole lot of the newer lo carb items and increasing calories. The reason for this was because I was a heavy smoker almost all my life and gave up smoking--and have not had a cigarette in six months now--taking a toll on my arteries and as a diabetic, I am at risk to begin with without the cigarettes. I think I am back on track now--because something is lo carb does not mean you will not gain weight if you eat too much of it--like shakes and bars.

18. Congratulations for getting off the cigarettes!
Edited on Wed Nov-05-03 02:03 PM by MissMarple
I used to smoke. But I just kept self limiting the places I could smoke that it almost became beside the point. Not in the house, in the car, in front of the children, friends(who didn't smoke), hubby, etc. But at cocktail hour, that was the hardest.

Needlepoint helped a lot as a substitute behavior. You really can't smoke or eat while doing it. Good luck.

:bounce:

10. I have been on the Atkins diet about 6 months now
I have only lost 16 pounds so far but my weight is slowly going down.
I was on induction for over 2 months and only lost 7 pounds. I am
Currently having around 50 grams of carbs a day, and am still in
ketosis. I just got my labs back and all blood work was normal, a year
ago my triglycerides were so high they were unable to read the
cholesterol. That was on a low fat diet. I have been struggling for
years with low fat diets. Up and down, up and down. I have lost as much
as 60 pounds that way and end up putting it back on. I was on my latest
one for about 3 years. I had lost 30 pounds at one point and I was up
ten of that when I started Atkins.

I can see making this diet a life style as opposed to the life
struggle of a low fat diet. I do not crave food all of the time. I
feel better in general and my wife says I get less cranky. I have
always been more of a fat addict. I do not crave carbohydrates nearly
as much as I use to crave fats, put a piece of sausage or cheese next
to a piece of pie I will go for the sausage or cheese every time. It
is interesting that I am loosing weight eating all the things I have
deprived myself of for so many years. I am below 200 pounds for the first time in years.

12. 6 Months...
...40 lbs down, and now fluctuating up and down 5 lbs.

I have reintroduced carbs, but only during one meal, usually lunch or snack.

No kidney stones since. Blood sugar is largely more stable. BP is down 35 points. Lost 3 inches in my waist. Chasing down balls during tennis I never had a chance at before.

Later,
JM

13. haven't tried any special products
Just trying to choose foods that are naturally low in carbs.

After my two weeks induction (on South Beach) when I'm into Phase II, I'll have the occasional treat (really occasional - like once a month). If I run into weight gain, I can always go back to a week of Phase I to get back on track.

Real people (thin people even) have a piece of chocolate from time to time. I plan on being able to.

14. Just found: sugar free jelly belly beans!
these are really good. Be careful of two things with some of these products: some are low sugar but not low carb and the carbs they do contain are hardly any better than sugar in terms of glycemic index. Second, (as I expect many of us have already recongized) sorbitol, mallitol and th eother sugar alcohols have an unfortunate laxative effect, thereby FORCING moderation!

19. Vitamin Shoppe and Trader Joe's
Vitamin Shoppe carries Atkins and Keto products at a discount-otherwise, I find low-carb products to be very expensive. You can order them online if there isn't a Vitamin Shoppe near you.

I am picky about pasta and Trader Joe's carries a good low-carb penne called Bella Vita. Most other low-carb pastas taste like cardboard.

I've lost 30 lbs on Atkins and have maintained a low-carb lifestyle. I have given up white flour, sugar and potatoes, though I do splurge on ice cream once in a while. I feel great.

20. 20 pounds and counting here
I'm almost obsessed with eating low carbs and I'm loving it. My plan is low carb breakfast, a few carbs for lunch and healthy carbs for dinner. I won't touch bread, no need for it in my diet right now.

Plenty of multi-vitamins (Atkin's brand). I shop at Vitamin Shoppe - they have tons of Atkins foods for a great price
