Advice on ISP's requested
Just curious who your internet service provider is, and why you chose them. I am moving, soon, to the Atlanta area (Gwinnett County), and I'd like to find an ISP that offers the following:

1. National Access (Lots and lots of local access numbers around the country)

2. Both Dial-up and DSL access (DSL is in my future, I hope)

3. A liberal leaning

4. It has to be a stable company - been around awhile

Any suggestions from you folks? Thankx in advance

1. let me recommend one . . .
LeftWeb.com fulfills all of your criteria except that I don't think it offers DSL. Its founder/web meister is a DU poster. I get 3 free e-mail addys, 3 free web sites with 5MB each, for only $9.95--this price only to the first 20 people signing up. Lots of personal attention!

8. I hope I can be that fortunate
I haven't found a job yet, and I've been looking pretty darned hard for more than 3 months. My partner is going back to school at UGA (Ph.D.) and I was hoping something would come up before we have to move. Well, here it is, weeks away from our move, and I've yet to get a single call back from the hundreds of companies I've contacted.

4. I started off with Juno's free web service
I had to put up with a permanent banner add while surfing, and got kicked off after about 30 minutes, but what the hey, it was free! I finally caved and now pay $9.95 for their platinum package. I think it's a great dial-up service. I think they merged with NetZero, too.

5. Check out HighStream $8.95mo., or, w/ the accelerator $11.95mo.
Lots of numbers and they've been around for a good while.

They have a basic dial-up for $8.95, and then the Accelerator feature for $2 extra. This accel feature really does work on most sites, especially if you visit the sites regularly. I switched to them after I dropped Comcast cable isp. Its not as fast as cable or dsl, but much faster than reg. dial-up. And NO ads to sit thru from them as you surf.

Not sure about political orientation, but I really like the service.

6. I've had Mindspring...
which is now Earthlink, for years, and have very few complaints. They have nationwide numbers, and DSL or cable in many areas. Some people object to them because of the rumor that some of the top management are Scientologists. I have no idea if the rumor is true, or whether that should make a difference. My email address with them is all over the place, though, so it would be a pain to change, and their mail, news, and web servers are extremely reliable, with multiple backups. They change dialup numbers every so often, but dialup is usually reliable, with few busies or hangups. Comes with five email addies and 10 megs webspace with each one, and you can buy more if you need them. They also have the Spaminator, which nails about 75% of my incoming spam, and means I don't need stuff like Mailwasher which don't do all that much much better.

I also have Verizon for DSL, mainly because I can't get rid of it once they hooked it on my line. As an ISP, they kind of suck, and have few useful services that I can find. It is reliably on line almost all the time, though, which is the important thing, and I can access my incoming Mindspring mail with it. (although I have to send mail out through the Verizon server because of technical and security stuff.)

7. Earthlink was founded by Scientologist Sky Dayton
who is still company chairman, but I'm reasonably sure it is controlled by GTE/Sprint, as they own it.

I'm on Earthlink dialup and my girlfriend is on Mindspring. We haven't been happy with the service lately, but I'm starting to suspect that this might be due to substandard service by the local phone company, as nobody else seems to be having big problems with either. Regardless, we're frustrated and probably will be making a change soon.
