Poll question: Have You Ever Been Published?
Has your name ever appeared in print, ANYWHERE?

Ever write an article for the school newspaper?

Ever appear IN the school newspaper?

A company newsletter?

Your local paper?

A big paper?

A magazine?

A book?

Anything?!?!!??!

Just for the sake of full disclosure. I've appeared in four newspapers, two large, two small. Two magazines. Two school newspapers and the company newsletter.

As soon as I sit down and write my first book I'll have all the bases covered.

What about you?

10. I'm a free-lance journalist
cover local government in Upstate New York ...school boards, towns and villages, etc. I've worked for three different weekly papers and one daily. I was also featured in an article about internet message boards in the New York Times (about five or six years ago, when they weren't so common.) I was on the school newspaper, editor of our high school poetry magazine and have had other small pieces published.
Mostly I do PR for a living.

I had a killer LTTE in AutoWeek once! Some people still remark on it. ;) It related to sexism, Frankfurt Auto Show, and the Porsche 959.

I used to be half of the team that put together the underground newspaper at my college when I was an undergrad. I did the political commentary and the sports and the fake advertising. :-) It was FUN!

I've also had LTTE published in my local newspaper back home and in the regular old boring college newspaper.

20. several nonfiction books
Lord know how many magazine pieces over the years. Haven't done much in quite a few years though. It gets old, and the pay and lack of benefits is beyond lousy. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless they already had contacts in publishing; it's a waste of time otherwise. For the most part, you can assume that markets are closed to new unknown writers and have been for several years.

22. More than one of the above...
I wrote for my high-school paper and literary magazine. I wrote articles for the newsletter at the day camp where I worked. I had a story published in my college literary magazine. I was copy editor, features editor and editor-in-chief of my college paper (at different times).
I now edit a trade publication serving the cleaning industry. I've also freelanced for an education magazine, and received contributor credit for a book put out by my company.

I have never written anything that appeared in a community or national newspaper (although I've been quoted in both) or a newsstand magazine. I've never actually written a book -- the contributor credit was for previous work that was excerpted.

I wrote articles for the school newspaper one year. Then it folded because of censorship. I have had poems and an essay published in the local newspaper. I wrote the theme poem for prom for my school. My short story was published in the county literary magazine. I had one article published in my college newspaper. I also wrote the Panhellenic sorority recruitment book for my college. I'm a bit out of practice writing wise. I used to write in all of my spare time. Maybe, that's why I'm on DU so often. This is a little bit like writing.

1.5 years in the Native media in the Canadian Arctic, some freelance travel writing in the UK, US and Canada, boating magazines, and six years in the Caribbean media.

I was St. Maarten's first restaurant reviewer (400 bars and restaurants and 16 casinos in 37 square miles) and did some investigative reporting as well as overseeing all supplements as an editor at a daily for a few years.

Then I shot out and had my own publication on the island but a hurricane wiped us out. There was six feet of water in our living room (I measured the water marks on the wall). Living on a beach is nice. But not in a cyclone.

Actually we endured seven hurricanes in all. They were not all severe but Luis, Marilyn and George were category four and that is waaaay to much for such small island in the Caribbean. You can only see so much despair so many times, before it really gets to you.

In the end I was doing hard news and a first hand view of a rapid crime rise due to a fall in tourism from 9-11... it was time to go. We had children and decided to head back to Europe where we now live. And I don't miss it. I look forward packing the kids and wife into the van and heading to Italy and Greece next summer. The Caribbean was a great place to spend our twenties. We had a lot of fun!

Best times?

Interviewing Canada's first female astronaut, Roberta Bondar and taking a long walk with her discussing what the Northern Lights looked like from 'up there'. It was a particularly vivid lightshow that night.

Doing a cover story on Wildman chef Anthony Bourdain (A Cook's Tour, Kitchen Confidential) on the beach, before taking him to the my favourite Johnny Cake shack (he loved it), where copious amounts of rum and beer were consumed. The man is absolutely hilarious.

Currently in transition. New country, new life, new job? Not yet.
