I need distraction...what's the best rock/pop concert you have been to
This is a hard one for me...so many great musicians out there...
Neil Young/Crazy Horse "Rust Never Sleeps" in 1977 was awesome...
Zeppelin on my 18th birthday would rank right up there...
Aerosmith "Nine Lives" tour - 3 times...rocked big time...
Jethro Tull at U of Iowa homecoming in 1975...
Lou Reed on my 19th birthday (with Ian Drury and the Blockheads)...
All great!

What has been best for other DUers???

12. Butthole Surfers!!!
Saw them ten times or more...always an amazing show...my favorite was in May of 1987 at the Marble Bar in Baltimore...changed my life...Nude dancer, penis dissection films, multiple strobes, and unbelievable psychedelic music...life was very good!!!

And as an aside...some VERY COOL fan posted that very show the day before yesterday on Usenet...An amazing show that I just got finished listening to!!!

21. it really was!
we wandered around Halloween SF in a daze afterwards. The buses weren't running, huge mobs of freaks in bizarre costumes everywhere.

GLORIOUS!

I never needed the third eye open again after that, actually. It couldn't get much better.

The recent DEMONS DANCE ALONE tour was great, too. They just put out a DVD from it.

15. An Evening with Rush
Actually, 4 different evenings with Rush.
And Steely Dan was very pleasant.

And my worst concert experience?
I went to one of those Monsters of Rock type things in the 90's. When I arrived, midday Houston humidity and blast furnace heat, some deranged lead singer of some forgettable kill-your-mother band was committing violence against the stool he had been sitting on--with a chainsaw. The rest of the day was no better.

17. King Crimson "Beat"
Left my mouth hanging open, they were THAT GOOD! Unbelievable skills in that quartet.

Some other great ones:
The Fixx at The Vic (1999)
David Bowie (Sound & Vision Tour That was the 5th time i have seen him and saw him once since.)
Prince and NPG (1998 i think) Man, was that band tight!
Clapton & Santana (1975)
Sting & The Blue Turtles (1989?)
Jetro Tull (1974 from backstage!)

Those are probably the shows i remember best for being so good, in every way.

18. there's been so many....
Misspent youth?!?

Bob Dylan - Hammerstein Ballroom, August 2003 -- total seats 3500, small hall.

Los Lobos - in front of the World Trade Center -- weird edgy psychedelic punk at the belly of the beast on Puerto Rico Parade day

Grateful Dead at the Willie Nelson Picnic, 1978 at Arrowhead Stadium, football venue, cognitive dissonance of rednecks and hippies at that juncture in history

John Mclaughlin & Shakti -- Central Park Summerstage

Jeff Beck on the Blow by Blow tour, spring 1975 with Mahavishnu Orchestra opening for him.

Joe Strummer at Irving Plaza, 1999, there's nothing like a hardcore rocker in NYC.

& that's just the beginning

23. Then & Now
In my college days during the 70's hands down Jackson Browne, the best singer/songwriter of that era, which included such illuminaries as the Eagles, Poco and Dan Fogleberg.

This past summer I saw Los Lobos and they literally rocked the joint down. Anchored by two drummers these guys are not for the timid. I had no idea what to expect, which made the experience even better.

25. Tool, August 2002
in Providence. My brother hooked me up with a job as a security guard that night, so I got in free. They also had more security than they needed, so I basically just got to stand around and watch the show - pretty sweet deal. Apparently whoever was in charge noticed I wasn't doing my job, though, because I never got paid. Ah well.

Also went to Ozzfest '01 and '02 in Mansfield, Mass.

48. I saw Tool at the Glastonbury (UK) festival years ago...
Dragged a friend along to see their set after a mate of mine gave me the Prison Sex CD single and I thought it was great.

My mate had never heard of Tool, but she thought that they did a great set.

IIRC the singer came back on and did a song with Rage Against the Machine too....

Honorable Mention - Pearl Jam, Nashville, 2003 - Would've been better, but the seats were bad, so the sound sucked.

50. U2
Madison Square Garden, The Joshua Tree tour. I hadn't heard much U2 before and some friends from work said they were going to go into the city (from Long Island) to try to scalp tickets. I had never heard anyone play guitar like The Edge. His rythm, playing along with the delay, and Bono's great voice, were awesome. "Bullet the Blue Sky" was the high point for me. And the crowd was singing all the way down the stairs after the show (the first time I had ever heard that happen).

They played at the Miami Baseball Stadium. I got there early, was first in line when they opened the stadium gates, and managed to fight my way through the rampaging crowd and grab great seats front and center (it was a first-come first-served type seating arrangement). The Who had their original lineup in place and sounded great. Best. Concert. Ever.

65. Christine Lavin
with lyrics like these, a good time is guaranteed

I didn't mean it when I said I hope the cable in the elevator snaps when you step on board
and I was joking when I said I hope you crack your head and get mangled by the downstairs revolving door
and I was kidding when I said I hope the number 103 bus hits and makes a pancake out of you
I'm sorry, I'm sorry
isn't it amazing what a woman in love will do?

(she's not exactly pop, and she's not rock, but she's great)

66. So many to choose from...depends on the type of music...
U2 (Zoo TV and Elevation tours)
The Who (Their first farewell tour, in the early 80s)
Neil Young & Crazy Horse (Greendale - current tour - good show)
Santana (late 70s)
Pink Floyd (Texas Stadium 1988)
Jethro Tull (Stormwatch - 1979)
Stevie Ray Vaughn (free show at AZ State Fair, 1984)

They're all at the top of my list.

The "B" list gets pretty long.
