Hair Length Prompts Mother To Question Athletic Policy
When is a boy's hair too long to play basketball?

Cambron Clark was excited last summer after he decided to transfer from the Winslow campus to Greenland Elementary School for seventh grade and the chance to play basketball, his mother told the Greenland School Board on Monday.

That excitement was erased on the first day of the 2004-05 school year when 13-year Cambron was told to cut his hair, Brenda Clark recalled, retracing events of the last school year that included incidents of bullying and ridicule by coaches and other players.

...

The coaching staff wants boys to look more uniform with shorter hair, Brawner said.

"Once a rule is established by the coaches, all coaches follow the same rule," Brawner said.

1. Honors student, good kid, all this over hair
Edited on Wed Jul-20-05 07:08 AM by Wickerman
He showed promise as the starting point guard on the seventh-grade team but he couldn't play basketball because his "long hair" rested on the back of his shirt collar and reached the tips of his ear lobes on the sides, said Clark, with a school photo in hand of her son.

2. Mother should file a lawsuit
Sexual discrimination.
I am no attorney but unless they have a policy for the girls to cut their hair also then this appears to be blatant discrimination.

my 2 cents

3. They still do this crap?
I knew a kid back in 1969 who's 'rents were suing the school over HIS hair length. It was about the same length as this kid's.

School's defense was that it was "Disruptive to the Educational Process"....

Actually, I don't think anybody even noticed until Principal "Burr" Weddle got a bug up his ass over it.

Why was he called "Burr"? Because "Buzzcut" wasn't dignified enough....

4. In seventh grade, we transefer from one suburb to another,
outward mugration. The first day we arrived at our new school, we were welcomed by an ex marine buzz cut disciplinarian disguised as a principal and told to cut our hair. Not hello, welcome to or school but cut your hair.

Now, our hair wasn't all that long, this was 1969 after all. But we balked. My mother balked. So when we, my brother and I arrived at school three days later, we were met at the door, told to turn around and the principal drove us to the one barber store in the city and forced us to get a hair cut.....

Now if that didn't change me from a geeky kid who only wanted to study and read into a charter member of the onstinante hate authority fuck band, well my name isn't George Bush.....
