Man's signature offends DMV
Office denies new driver's license
By SEAN O'SULLIVAN
Staff reporter
07/17/2003

Charles Weinstein's signature is more legible than many - it is just that it appears to be upside down.

And this is a problem for the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles, which informed Weinstein on Monday that his signature was "unacceptable." Weinstein said a clerk told him he would not get a new driver's license until he agreed to sign it "right."

Weinstein, 45, of Glasgow, has refused, saying it should be up to him, not the DMV, to decide how he writes his name.

He said he trained himself to write his name in this unusual way, working right-side up, as a way to make his mark unique. He said he has been signing his name this way for more than eight years on all official papers, checks, credit cards - even his old driver's license. It was never a major problem until this week, he said, when he went to the DMV office on Airport Road to change his address.

1. What Nonsense!!!
Yet another example of someone in power just LOOKING for ANY EXCUSE whatsoever to be able to exercise their power. Even if they choose to exercise it foolishly, by-golly they certainly have the "because-i-said-so" enforcers on their side.

They are everywhere you look. Makes me sick. Sick I tell you. Just plain ill.

3. Reminds me of...
a woman I knew who changed her last name to G. As in leagally, signed by a judge in a court of law to the letter G. The periods you see are simply to end the sentence. Not an abreviation just the letter G.

She had no end of grief.

I find it also interesting to note that often a form will say "signiture or mark". This is a hold over to when people made a mark, or simble that represented them if they could not write their name. Sounds like this guy is combining the two. I knew another guy who signed his name in cursive english and included a mark with his signiture.

I would think that simply bringing in documentation or proof that that is how he does it they would have to accept it.

In defense of the DMV workers, they probably thought it was a prank. And I think I can see how they would.

4. What I found amusing
Was if you turned this man's signature right side up you can clearly read his name.

However the Delaware DMV finds no issue with my signature even though you can barely tell what my last name is or the fact that there are 10 letters to the name (you can probably pick out about 3).

A follow up to this - DE DMV finally allowed this guy's license to go through with the upsidedown signature. Probably after the News-Journal made them look pretty foolish with the whole article

(and for those of you who are really adventure - check out the Letters to the Editor in that same issue of the News Journal (7/17), you might see a certain Evil DUer you all know!!!)
