Help! How do I get special characters on my PC?
Edited on Tue Jul-22-03 03:38 PM by FlashHarry
Right now, I'm on a Mac, where special characters are ingrained in the keyboard--all I have to do is press 'option' and a key and I get the character. œ<sum>´®†¥¨ˆø…¬???©ƒ?ßå¡™£¢§´?ß??ç??˜µ<=>=>=÷¢?§¶•ªº etc. However, when on my PC at home, I can't seem to make it work--other than in MS Word, where I have to use the 'insert symbol' function.

My main goal is to be able to use umlauts, accents and other language characters.

1. use the Character Map
In Windows, click Start-> Programs-> Accessories-> System Tools ->Character map. Look for the symbol you want, click it, choose "copy", then doing a Control+V in whatever program you want to insert it in should do the trick.

10. Are you the official DU greeter?
Ha úgy gondolja, hogy a szót elgépelte, vagy nem biztos az írásmódjában, megnézheti az szótárban megtalálható hasonló szavak listáját. Yeah . . . welcome to DU . . .

4. Now testing this method.
© That was control V after selecting a "heart". Oh, well.

I just typed alt 0169 but I don't see anything.

I will now try a trident: Y
It looks like a "Y" so far. Perhaps I need to know what font DU is using first. Beats me.

7. Umlauts are working fine
Ist Wahrheit schön?
Man ist, was man ißt.

Ä is alt(142) for example.

8. Thîs sëëmß å løt éåßîèr øn å Måç!
My old laptop––purchased in Switzerland––had a Swiss keyboard, which had all the umlauts and accents I needed. Now my new one has none of the above! Grrr.

9. You can load another Keyboard layout
You'd have to remember the positions of the keys, but it eases writing German texts with a little practise (we only have American Keyboards at the University).

6. Find the same font in the character map
you are using in your document. Otherwise you will get different symbols. Not all character sets have the same code for the same symbol.
