Online dating services. Have you used them?
I was wondering if anyone in DU had used any of the internet dating sites(eharmony, etc.) and if they were successful. Which ones are the best?

1. Match.com
And I have had a few good meetings, one might have gone long term, but flopped for unknown reasons. No recent luck with it.

3. A friend's sister is marrying a guy she met on eHarmony.
He wasn't the first guy she met, but they've been dating a year or two now and are getting married this fall.

My friend, her sister, was a member for a while and didn't meet anyone she clicked with.

So mileage varies.

6. So what is the big difference with EHarmony?
Are the compatibility (trigger) questions more complex?

8. There are like fifty thousand questions.

Not kidding. There are a LOT of questions. And if I remember correctly, some of them are different shades of the same question--supposedly so they can be extra precise....

But then, instead of just writing freely once someone is paired up with you, you ask them a few questions (again, from memory) that you either write in or their pre-selected ones (what would you least like to do on a weekend, like that). They don't get your email address or your picture...

Finally, you get to open communication, where you freely write/send a picture, whatever.

So it seems to me that eHarmony is more cautious in a way and more structured. And when you are paired up with someone, you pretty much know that you match on paper at least, in a lot of ways.

I'm pretty sure it's more expensive than the other ones.

4. Did u catch some of "Hooking Up" on TV last night as well?
I did. A sort of documentary/reality show about young daters in NYC, who seem to meet mostly online one way or another.
(Me, I'm one of those guys who has basically given up on trying to date. I'm not bad looking, and pretty much in shape, but Not Hot Enough for today's neo-polygamist dating scene: women just don't need that many of us really.)

DISCLAIMERS: I don't hate women.
I don't think that women hate "nice guys" and love "assholes."

5. back in the ancient era, (late 90s)
i used AOL with some pretty good successes...(5-6 steady gf in a row over the course of 2-3 years)

back in 03, used Match for a year with NO success...pure waste of my $$$$

since then, i've used yahoo with so-so results...met some interesting women, but some real duds as well...I've also found that women seem more likely to use yahoo for nonserious, 'joke' ads where they are not really looking for anyone...

however, yahoo does have a very large pool, and i will probably use their service again in the future
