Phyllis Diller line heard on NPR's Weekend Edition today
"...I'm a terrible driver, I never know if it's one o'clock or I'm going 100."
I thought it was funny anyway.

1. I heard that interview, it was great. Especially since I actually
thought Phyllis Diller was dead

2. I love the comedy from the late '50s and early '60s
Here's a link to some nice archives with profiles and excerpts:

Diller, Newhart, Smothers Bros, Bill Dana (Jose Jimenez), still crack me up.

It was a shame that Steve Allen passed on Nov. 2nd 2000. It didn't get the press it should have. What's it they say: Death's easy, comedy is hard."?

Best,

4. I do too
don't forget Jonathan Winters, Nichols and May, and Stan Freberg, to name a few.

Have you heard of Coyle and Sharp, the Absurd Impostors? They were hilarious, here is their website if you are interested...

5. Steve Allen was brilliant. I loved his old variety shows, with
the man on the street interviews, and hilarious skits and sketches.
Did you know he wrote the music for the movie "Picnic" and composed other things as well?

And he portrayed clarinetist Benny Goodman in a bio-movie.
And he wrote novels

6. I liked his program "Meeting of the Minds"
It had actors portraying people from different eras discussing policies and philosphy. It was really interesting.

7. He composed among many things...

This Could Be The Start of Something Big

You're walkin' along the street, or you're at a party,
Or else you're alone and then you suddenly dig,
You're looking' in someone's eyes, you suddenly realize
That this could be the start of something big.

You're lunching at Twenty-One and watchin' your diet,
Declining a charlotte russe, accepting a fig,
When out of a clear blue sky, it's suddenly gal and guy,
And this could be the start of something big.

There's no controlling the unrolling of your fate, my friend,
Who knows what's written in the magic book.
But when a lover you discover at the gate my friend,
Invite her in without a second look.

You're up in an aero plane or dining at Sardi's,
Or lying at Malibu alone on the sand,
You suddenly hear a bell, and right away you can tell
That this could be the start of something grand.

This could be the start of something very big,
Why don't you play your part?
Please give your heart to me and see.
This could be the start of something wonderful,
Why don't you take a chance?
Just try romance with me and see.

You're watchin' the sun come up and countin' your money,
Or else in a dim cafe you're ordering wine,
Then suddenly there he is, and you wanna be where he is,
And this must be the start of something...
This could be the heart of something...
This could be the start of something big.

3. I heard that too
Yeah I thought that was funny myself. I was suprised to hear an interview of her myself, after all these years. For 88 years old she sounded pretty good!
