1. frankly, unemployment and homelessness sounds more appealing.....
I would NOT be a good cube drone.

3. i would find myself
becoming more and more sociopathic and disconnected from myself while working in offices.

i think that's why i used to drink so much. the level of alienation (especially when you occupy "surveilled class" lower level positions) and the amount of control people tried to exercise over me often left me listless.

i've been job-free (mostly) for three years now.

the poverty sucks though.

5. if you don't mind me asking
and i know it sounds like a stupid question, but what did you do to make that transition? the corporate employment monolith (at least for me) represented a form of warped security. like an alcoholic father in a way.

did you start working for yourself or smaller business or something?

11. I became an artist
after a 20-year career in the MSM. It was a painful, at at times impoverished, transition, but I haven't for a moment regretted it.

7. I've never worked in such a place
Always looked horrible to me. I've been very fortunate in my jobs - never had what anyone would call a "career" but I've had a lot of fun and interesting jobs and I have experience in so many different and offbeat things that I can usually find a job pretty quickly. I've never been without a job longer than a couple of months.

8. yes!

I don't like the claustrophobia-HOW do people tolerate that all day???? Especially on beautiful days-we humans need the sun overhead and the earth beneath our feet, NOT flourescents over our heads and concrete under our feet.

23. The way I survive is my iPod and portable DVD
player. I listen to movies all day at work. When I am not listening to movies or other DVDs I have my beloved iPod.

I don't know what it will be like once my current boss leaves and a new, un broken in, boss takes over her position. Given that the director who will be doing the hiring is a fundie I worry about what or whom she will hire.

9. I am a cube rat, but I work in a very relaxed atmosphere.
Great job, wonderful benefits, so I can't complain. Plus, my hours are 7 to 4. That way I miss most of the Atlanta rush hour traffic. The salary sucks, though.

10. yes and no
I am happily employed for 2 weeks after 4 years without a permanent position. Its a corporate environment, but- they have a very casual dress code, and its really friendly. The company is growing fast so there's a huge workload- and the higher ups have responded in a good way by trying to make the work environment as comfortable as possible.

Since I'm a tech and have to crawl under desks to check cables, I can wear jeans and really focus on the work. Also, there's some differences between big corporate and small corporate- big ones seem to have more focus on security and uniformity. In the smaller one, you can even have a fishbowl at your desk!

15. OH.MY.GOD. You should see MY office.
You'd run screaming. It is without a doubt the ugliest, most soul-crushing office environment I've ever seen.

I am a graphic designer working for a company that publishes children's books, cookbooks, and stationery/gift items. You'd think our offices would be cheerful and colorful and inspiring to the creative staff. HA!

It's a 60's era one-story former factory and probably hasn't been thoroughly cleaned/painted since then. Dirty, frayed brown carpeting, dirty gray walls, ratty old gray cubicles, flickering flourescent light, dirty, torn old furniture, no windows except in the outermost offices (the building is enormous so I am not even remotely in view of any windows or even reflected natural light), smelly old bathrooms, and the ugliest, most depressing cafeteria ever.

To top it off, the light above my desk has a huge blob of dried tar as a reminder of when they re-tarred the paper-thin roof and tar started leaking in on us. I was standing at the printer when a whole bunch dripped less than a foot from my right shoulder. Did they send people home to avoid any injuries? Fuck no! We had to sit there breathing in tar fumes while hoping we wouldn't be permanently disfigured by molten tar. Oh, and we have ants, mice, and flies.

God I fucking hate that place. When I decided to be a graphic designer I pictured myself in a funky loft building with big windows, cool furniture, excellent lighting, art all around, maybe even some video games or a ping-pong table. Instead I am in an office that could not possibly be any uglier or more depressing.

22. Probably, it's too far gone anyway. I think the dirt is the only
thing holding the carpet together. It needs a MAJOR overhaul but they'll never do it. They don't see the value in keeping their employees happy.
