Poll question: Worst Led Zeppelin Song
Edited on Sat Jul-23-05 11:47 AM by SouthoftheBorderPaul
Yes, we all like to "Get the Led Out" every now and again, but despite their brilliance, The 'Zep had their weak moments too. In fact, sometimes it just sounded like they were hurling feces in the control room like a bunch of fucking orangutans.

I've compiled a list of their worst songs. Please weigh in or chose the "other" option and explain.

Edit: Typo. Addition of Stairway to poll.

"Don't make me throw this, Bonzo!"

4. The Lemon Song
Or any of their cheesily inadvertent blues parodies - which they had all over the place on Led Zeppelin II, my least favorite Zep album. It was called the 'Brown Bomber' for more than one reason.

I actually like "Hot Dog" and love "The Crunge" - they needed to show that they had a sense of humor to deflect any charges of pomposity. They weren't Yes, after all.

6. I agree they weren't Yes
but The Crunge is OBVIOUS filler. I mean, he says it right there in the song "Has anybody seen the bridge!?!?!" If you have to yell out *in* the song that a section is missing, shouldn't you just finish writing the song?

12. But at least they could poke fun of themselves
For having filler. Most bands at the time would talk up a great load of BS about how they love all of their songs, and this is our best album yet, etc. Plus, the mindless fun is contagious. I could almost see Robert Plant donning a cape and making fun of James Brown in the process. It was a sly way of showing off their eclectic tastes and influences.

When I said they did inadvertent blues parodies (they didn't seem to get the hang of the blues until "Since I've Been Loving You", and that made me forgive them for previous transgressions), they also did purposeful parodies too... "The Crunge" is deliberately bad, as opposed to just bad.

"Houses of the Holy" is such a great album, not even that cut can damage it.

For their worst filler, just cue up the second disc of "Physical Grafitti". They should have kept it a single classic album, rather than a double semi-classic.

24. The Lemon song is a rip off of Howlin' Wolf's "killing Floor"
Wolf actually sued Zep over that---they ripped the classic riff in the breaks and Robert Plant merely re-arranged most of the lyrics for the song

Edited on Sat Jul-23-05 12:18 PM by ZombyWoof
And 'Killing Floor' is one of my favorites, you get my point to a tee.

Also, some of the lyrics ripped off Robert Johnson in the worst way.

And! Willie Dixon sued them for "Whole Lotta Love". He was bitter about Zeppelin until the day he died. He loved ZZ Top though, which means he knew the difference between white guys paying homage versus ripping them off.

31. Yep. "You need Love"
Muddy Waters--1962. great record.

The funny thing is Dixon really only wrote the words to the song. Earl Hooker wrote the song, with the guitar playing the melody and Dixon wrote lyrics, and Muddy overdubbed his voice over the Hooker insturmental track.

Dixon didn't get his victory in Court until 1987 for Whole Lotta Love either. he died in 1990 I think.

7. Sacrelige...
It's "Stairway to Heaven" of course! Overplayed, over-produced, and pretentious beyond Zep's usually self-absorption. Give me "Kashmir" any day before "Stairway".

But in contention is "Moby Dick". Especially the live version on "The Song Remains the Same". 20 mins of a drum solo, oh joy!

I meant to include that one. Sorry, but if the song was once pretty good but is now considered awful 'cause it's overplayed, then it's just awful no matter how good it once was.

15. Plant would probably agree
He has dissed "Stairway" more than once, as just a "pleasant little English ditty". I believed he was very tired of it.

'Moby Dick' AND 'Bonzo's Montreux' are in contention. I love Bonzo, but I didn't necessarily want to watch him masturbate.

10. South Bound Suarez. Like 1,000,000 nails down 1,000,000 blackboards.
Worst Led Zeppelin moment: "Does anybody remember LAUGHTER?" in the live version of "Stairway." That one makes about as much sense as "By the time I'm finished with you, y'all be wearin' gold plated DIAPERS."

John Paul Jones showed that their brand of dinosaur rock could survive the new wave era provided your synths were mixed just right.

Or it's just my inner 12 year old in a fit of nostalgia.

18. I was a DJ when Stairway came out
I got 15-20 requests per hour for it. They would even call to request it while it was playing. I never played it more than once per hour, and that pissed off a lot of shallow minds. I have heard that song so many times that I leave the room whenever it is played.

Stairway exclusively. They eventually expanded their play list to include all Zep's catalogue, then all Doors, Zep and maybe The BEatles. Then I think it just went away.

33. I remember that.
It was a station in Florida that attempted an all-Zeppelin format, until someone pointed out that Zep had little over 10 hours of recorded material at the time. They eventually switched to classic rock.
