3. Yeah, and one of my all time Canadian faves
Apparently, just when Country Boy hit big and they were poised to break through to a national audience, they were touring somewhere way out in the boonies (in B.C.) and their van went off the road, destroying their equipment and, I think, injuring some of them - and, of course, doing away with their van. End of band. Damn rotten luck. Country Boy shows them to be really terrific musicians and that song hasn't aged a bit since the day it was released, IMHO...

4. Two offbeat suggestions
If it's raining (or snowing?), Molly Johnson's latest disc, "Another Day," is steamy, laid-back, and supple, just the right mood. And it's Canadian to boot.

Something different? Reach into the archives for (stay with me here) the Alan Parsons Project's "The Turn of a Friendly Card" (1980). Dismiss the hopelessly sappy single "Time," and the rest of the disc holds up remarkably well.

5. Another BC song...
Even more obscure, Hard to Cry by the Northwest Company who were from the Fraser valley. For my money it's THE greatest rock song ever recorded, bar none. Their other stuff is also terrific. Neptoon Records in Van just released a compilation of Northwest Company stuff a few months ago, the first time ever that their work has been collected.

18. Patti Smith - "People Have the Power" from Wave
Gone Again and/or Peace and Noise.

Patti Smith's voice is a voice of freedom. Great music for the road, home, anywhere. If you get a chance to see her life you will be impressed.

Gil Scott Heron, "Spirits"
Curtis Mayfield, "New World Order"
Govt Mule, "Life Before Insanity" & "Live With a Little Help From Our Friends"
Tom Waits "Heart of Saturday Night"
