Poll question: Favorite punk band
Which comes first in response to this thread?

How could you forget ________?
OR
How can you call Green Day punk?

For the record I'm pretty sure I know who's going to win this poll.

2. the DKs are lovely but....
i'm going to have to go with NOFX, they have been consistently making me happy year after year with each release. i can't begin to express how much i respect NOFX for the way they have handled themselves in the business over the years.

NOFX rocks. i don't look for much in the "punk" genre these days, but i will always buy the newest NOFX record when it comes out.

24. I saw the Stooges in Boston in the 70's
I remember Iggy Pop giving the crowd the finger and throwing trash into the crowd. David Bowie had been on tour with him, but not at this concert. The crowd kept chanting "Bowie, Bowie", which pissed off Iggy. Great show.

Edited on Sun Jul-24-05 04:52 PM by ZombieNixon
Mark my words. I will hunt you down. ;)

Fathers of new school punk, and still going after 20+ years.

NOFX a close second. Those two have been my favorites for years.

Other, less big bands to check out:
Rise Against
Strike Anywhere
Strung Out

I dunno if Strung Out is really full fledged punk since they border on metal oftentimes, but that just makes them rock harder. Their newest album kicks some major ass!

Edit: Damn it! Does anyone else get "of," "on," "in," "is," "if" and "it" hopelessly confused when you type fast?

13. I could get into a big argument about what it is to be punk...
and some people believe that it is punk to state that punk had been dead since its inception.

To me, being "punk" means nothing more than being yourself, which is why I avoid discussions of this kind and why I hate the "punker than thou" types (please note that I am not accusing you of being one)

18. The Misfits. A few of your bands on there aren't punk.
The Clash sucks and are not punk, neither are NOFX and Green Day. Why not include the Offspring or Sum 41 if you are going to have those non-punk bands listed as punk?

How about D.R.I., The Cramps, Black Flag, Generation X, T.S.O.L., Broken Bones, Minor Threat, Verbal Abuse, D.I., G.B.H, Dr. Know and Suicidal Tendencies? That's punk, not pop crap like The Clash.

35. 35.
And you are going to tell me that Rock The Casbah, Should I stay or Should I Go and other pop songs like London Calling and Train in Vain are Punk? If they are punk than so are The Hooters. Some of their older stuff is punky like White Riot, London's Burning and Bored with the U.S.A. but I do not believe they are a true representative of the genre the way they are considered to be. Other non-popular songs like The Magnificent Seven, Rudie can't Fail and Jimmy Jazz are also very far from Punk. I'm familiar with their work (A friend and I battle over this often) and I find it annoying that people consider them to be the great Punk band when others like The Misfits, The Kennedys and old D.R.I. blow their doors off. Simply having a mohawk does not make you Punk.

I forgot to mention the Circle Jerks, another great Punk band.

37. I've seen all those bands that you've mentioned
I agree that the Clash went too poppy. But when I saw them in 1978, they were truly punk. They incorporated other styles into their music, especially reggae. When I hear Rancid and Green Day, I hear the Clash, the Stranglers, Generation X, and the Damned.

The Clash were part of the first wave of punk. Most of the bands you mention came along later. I saw Black Flag and the Dead Kennedys in 1980 when they played Boston. One of my favorite local bands was Mission of Burma, and we had a pretty good hardcore scene too. I saw Minor Threat a bunch too.

Here's a list of some of the bands that I've seen in my lifetime:

46. in the old days, you didn't have to have a mohawk to be "punk"
you had to get off your butt and play an instrument you had never played. And The Clash were not posers, either. Punk isn't just a one-note thing, like people seem to think these days.

42. Dead Kennedys, in my opinion.
I agree with you, MrSlayer. The paradigm has shifted, and "punk" is now an umbrella term which includes overproduced, candycorn, non-subversive, corporate-friendly drivel like Good Charlotte and Sum 41.

The Clash were a great band, in my opinion. However, they do not generally conform to what stylistic purists commonly perceive as "punk". I know, using the words "conform" and "purists" in a conversation about punk rock is absolute blasphemy!

45. without The Clash
there would not have been many of those bands. Some of what you reference those of us who were there at the time, saw as "hardcore." The Clash were not one thing, they grew and were versatile.

The Clash did not, and do not, suck.

19. How about some mad props for the MC5?
Edited on Sun Jul-24-05 05:42 PM by jandrok
I voted The CLash, as they are my favorite punk band. HOWEVER, no one ever seems to mention the mighty Motor City 5 whenever these punk/rock polls come around. The MC5 delivered some of the rawest, meanest, PUNKEST rock n' roll EVER, and they did it in the mid-60's. They were the true godfathers of multiple genres of music. Punk can trace it's roots back to the MC5...so can metal and power pop. Don't believe me? Go get yerself a copy of "Kick Out The Jams" at your favorite record store, then plop that baby in the CD player and marvel at the sonic wall of trash-punk that comes out of the speakers.

No less a source than Iggy himself cited the MC5 as a major influence on the Stooges.

Those effer's ROCKED the house, man. No one had sen anything like them, especially in the middle of the flower-power era. They hit the scene like a runaway freight train, and then flamed-out with style.

31. Pouges.......
they were there at the beginning and they were better musicians than most of the others and they epitomized the whole original life style of fuck the world and fuck you for making it this way...

And, they had a wicked sense of humor and the ability to incorporate past thematic genre's without jeopardizing the sound.....

A lot of what passes for punk is just the trappings around a sub genre of style....

It's about more than Doc Martins and torn Tee Shirts and a vicious snarl...

Today, Green Day comes closest as far as I can see. Especially with the American Idiot Disc.........

Owes a lot to London Calling......

Note: Everyone always forgets Iggy and MC-5 and of course, The Kinks and The Who....

I don't claim to have much knowledge about what is and isn't punk, but the Offspring are my favorite group that I have ever heard labeled "punk" so I'll go with them, even though their last album was a major disappointment. In my opinion, all of their albums from Ignition to Americana (at least if you can get past "Pretty Fly" and "Why Don't You Get a Job?" on that one) are awesome and worth checking out.

So, in no particular order...

Sex Pistols, Ramones, Clash, Stooges, Dead Kennedys, Generation X, Black Flag, The Dickies, Minor Threat, Social Distortion, D.O.A., Germs, X, Circle Jerks, Operation Ivy, Angry Samoans, Misfits(but not that post 1995 shit),Bad Religion, Husker Du and yeah, even Green Day.

And I know I left out a shitload of bands that I'll remember long after it's too late to edit this shit, but it's all good.
