ATTN reptile lovers: I saw the elusive helmeted iguana today
i was in braulio carillo national park today and on the dimly lit floor of the forest i saw a helmeted iguana. i had never seen one in the wild before and supposedly they're very hard to find. i snapped off at least a dozen shots. most of the photos came out great. thought you might enjoy seeing the pics:

1. Cool Lizard!
We've been seeing a lot of Horned Lizards here lately, but they're not that cool...

4. Great shots!
Thank you for sharing them with us, what a beautiful Iguana. How large was it?

Congratulations on seeing one in the wild. I love it when I can mark off a sighting in my bird books so this must have been really exciting for you.

5. helmeted iguanas are not nearly as big......
...as green iguanas or spiny tailed iguanas (both are also native to costa rica). this guy was less than two feet long with his tail.

he was amazingly unafraid and he even let me pet him.

9. here's a shot with his mouth open....
...sticking out of his mouth, you can see the leg of the cricket he is eating. i saw that he was eating something right before i started snapping photos, but i didn't know what it was. i thought he was munching on a fallen piece of fruit. i didn't realize he was eating a cricket until i just looked at this shot in photoshop.
