Diet Coke sweetened with Splenda sucks ass!
So does Diet Coke with lime. Fresh limes are where it's at.

1. I can't stand the bottled Diet Coke with lemon or lime
It seems to overpower the taste of the soda.

Although in a restaurant, I will ask for Diet Coke with lemon.

The bottled stuff is just yucky :puke:

3. All artificial sweetners are bad for you.
I used to drink lots of soda's with splenda in them. Then I started having all types of health problems. Researched it a bit and found that a by-product of the manufactoring process to create splenda is a ddt like chemical.

The one they used before splenda (Nutra-sweet) had major problems too. They all seem to.

And none of them will actually help you loose weight. The body still seems to treat them as sugars. Research shows rats with identical diets with splenda being the only difference, the rats fed splenda will gain more weight.

While on the subject, drinks with high fructos corn syrup should be avoided also.

5. HFCS is poison
It's as poison as all the chemical (or "made from sugar") sugar substitutes out there.

Cane sugar in our soda, period.

14. I agree, and the best source of cane sugar is Simple Sugar.
It is cane sugar still in liquid form. Less processed.

Every step where they process and alter our food is one more place they do something that will have long term bad effects that we are not aware of.

Honey is also not bad as a sweetner for teas.

Water... coffee (yuck)... fresh fruit juice? (expensive)

Any national brand sodas still made with sugar? I know you can buy kosher Coke during passover, and there are some alarmingly expensive regional sodas that you can import... sigh.

12. I drink water and unsweeten teas now days.
I try to avoid fast food places, but if I have to go then I might drink a soda from there. I do have some juices in my house, but those are maybe a small glass a day. Sometimes I have soy milk - vanilla flavored (I know, not really milk because there is no soy tit, but it is good).

These are the alternatives I have found I can live with.

28. Kick the soda jones
It's easier than you think.

When we do buy soda, I buy Blue Sky brand. I'm sure there are others out there. Dr. Pepper has a plant in Texas somewhere that still manufactures using cane sugar, but it is sold only in that region.

Besides, how much choice do we need in our lives? I really think we have better things to think about than deciding whether we want to drink a brown bubbly drink or a green bubbly drink or a clear bubbly drink?

Not meaning to snark on you. I just feel frustrated because so many of us are addicted to the bounty of choices available to us, but I see that most of them are just a ruse and a burden.

31. I'm on a med that gives me cotton mouth really bad...
...and if I drank water all day long, I'd be forever making trips to the bathroom.

Of course, the HFCS is in just about EVERYTHING for sale at a grocery store that comes in a package, from bread to spaghetti sauce. It's the all purpose food product.

I know what you mean about the addiction to choice. As the King in the Bugs Bunny cartoon decreed: "Every day it's the same thing... variety. I want something different!"

Is it Snark Week already? ;)

10. Splenda, Nutrasweet, Stevia, even Saccharin are not bad for you
All the studies show is that if you drink 20 cans a day it's bad for you. Well shit, I got news for you. DRINKING 20 CANS OF ANYTHING EXCEPT WATER IS BAD FOR YOU!!!!

But sugar is known to raise your insulin, and HFCS will raise your insulin level the highest. Behind that Cane Sugar, behind that Honey.

And of course all three contain sugar carbs, which will be stored as fat if not used. Drink a Coke and run a mile, you won't gain weight - you'll lose it. Drink a Coke and work on the puter, you'll store fat.

Splenda on the other hand, is not processed. It is not burned as a carb, and it does not cause an insulin spike. The caffeine, however, prevents Ketatosis and drinking too many of them will cause you to store fat as it wreaks havoc on your metabolism.

So limit your cokes, but those studies that show rats getting fat from drinking diet coke is pure BS.

19. I am proof that it takes far less than 20 cans a day.
I drank a flavored water that had splenda in it. About 48 oz a day of that - which has less splenda than soda's. I had health problems from it. Digestive problems and extreem lack of energy - I could not even go up 1 flight of stairs. I stopped drinking that and got better over the course of a few weeks.

Splenda, Nutrasweet, Stevia, and Saccharin have all shown to have adverse health effects.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial_sweetener
"However, it should be noted that changing the food energy intake from one food will not neccessarily change a persons overall food energy intake, or cause a person to loose weight. No published study has shown this. One study <1> on WebMD, by the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, actually showed the opposite, where those who consumed diet soda were more likely to gain weight than those that consumed naturally sweetened soda."

Oldest Stats trick in the book.

Their control groups drink coke, eat big macs for breakfast lunch and dinner and gain weight

Their test group drinks diet coke, thinks their getting thinner, and eats one more big mac for dinner than the control group. They gain weight.

Its all about eating healthy

I have seen it directly with my own personal experience. That is good enough for me.

Research it. I just gave a few links, thousands more out there.

Is this like we still need more research to see if there is global warming, or on the theory of evolution?

30. Even the articles themselves state that it does not prove causation:
http://aolsvc.health.webmd.aol.com/content/article/107/108476.htm

"Fowler is quick to note that a study of this kind does not prove that diet soda causes obesity. More likely, she says, it shows that something linked to diet soda drinking is also linked to obesity.

"One possible part of the explanation is that people who see they are beginning to gain weight may be more likely to switch from regular to diet soda," Fowler suggests. "But despite their switching, their weight may continue to grow for other reasons. So diet soft-drink use is a marker for overweight and obesity." "

Diet Coke with Splenda is DA BOMB

It tastes better than New Pepsi One
It tastes better than Diet Rite
It tastes better than Diet RC

...in short it's better than any other Splenda cola. And Splenda is better than aspartame HANDS DOWN.

20. Fortunately, I very rarely drink any sodas,
But I use Splenda for anything that needs sweetening, which is very little at all. I don't drink coffee or tea. But I use Splenda for cereal and very little else. I would rather take my chances with Splenda than sugar.

26. Anybody had this problem....?
Edited on Wed Jul-27-05 12:38 PM by chaska
I discovered these sugar free (malatol was the sweetener, I believe) chocolate bars at the 99 cent store. Tried 'em, and loved 'em. But I soon realized that everytime I ate one I would get massive gas.

Snicker away, as I am, but seriously, has anyone else experienced this?

I used to make Splenda sweetened iced green tea, and would drink several glasses a day. Loved it, and never had a problem of any sort.
