***** DU SERVER FUND DRIVE *****

Well, it's official. DU needs a new server to keep this place humming. Skinner, EarlG, and elad (especially elad) have worked extremely hard to upgrade our home on the Web, but the software upgrade apparently isn't going to be enough.

The alternative to not replacing the server is continued bugginess and data losses like the one we had this afternoon in GD. I'm sure you will all agree that this is a vital source of news, inspiration and sanity that must be maintained.

I'll start by kicking in an extra $25. Who wants to match me? Who can afford to do more? I'm sure any amount will help from those fortunate to still have money in the Bush economy.

I manage a few rackshack boxes, which run around 100 bucks a month. Im not sure if you guys doing anything like that now, but you should definately look into such prospects, as they have the most affordable boxes at good prices if you have an experienced linux admin. I have one client with a rack at about 110 thats is pretty dominant. I figure thats probably affordable for everyone.

But I'm currently way underemployed, and part-time at that, and my job will be gone at the end of the summer because the grant didn't get renewed.

Wish I had the answers. Here's the thread where I asked Skinner about doing this and he didn't have a cost for a server nailed down yet.

As far as how much we've come up with so far, I guess we could add up what people listed in the thread here and the one in GD. Only problem with that is that not everyone listed the amount they contributed and perhaps some donated but did not post in the thread. I guess we could ask Skinner to tally the donations since yesterday.

I was just trying to help out. I know this isn't as formally organized as it could be.

Unfortunately, I don't have the answers to either of these.

We're working with our ISP on the server. We just don't know how much it will be at this point.

And I haven't totalled up the money yet, but the response seems to be pretty good. Thanks.
