"O Death"- Ralph Stanley
Everytime I play this, especially in the middle of the night, it gives me chills. Just Raplh's high lonesome wail...

O, Death
O, Death
Won't you spare me over til another year
Well what is this that I can't see
With ice cold hands takin' hold of me
Well I am death, none can excel
I'll open the door to heaven or hell
Whoa, death someone would pray
Could you wait to call me another day
The children prayed, the preacher preached
Time and mercy is out of your reach
I'll fix your feet til you cant walk
I'll lock your jaw til you cant talk
I'll close your eyes so you can't see
This very air, come and go with me
I'm death I come to take the soul
Leave the body and leave it cold
To draw up the flesh off of the frame
Dirt and worm both have a claim
O, Death
O, Death
Won't you spare me over til another year
My mother came to my bed
Placed a cold towel upon my head
My head is warm my feet are cold
Death is a-movin upon my soul
Oh, death how you're treatin' me
You've close my eyes so I can't see
Well you're hurtin' my body
You make me cold
You run my life right outta my soul
Oh death please consider my age
Please don't take me at this stage
My wealth is all at your command
If you will move your icy hand
Oh the young, the rich or poor
Hunger like me you know
No wealth, no ruin, no silver no gold
Nothing satisfies me but your soul
O, death
O, death
Wont you spare me over til another year
Wont you spare me over til another year
Wont you spare me over til another year..

2. I was lucky enough to see him in Phoenix
in a hole in the wall punk club and it was an amazing show. The look on all the hipsters that were mermorized by his voice I'll always remember..

5. so you like that old country stuff
Do like Bill Monroe, Hank Williams any of those old school guys? I like all of that stuff. Mighty depressing music though, lol. You can feel Hank's pain in every note. Guys like Hank, Hendrix, Jim Morrison, even a woman like Janis Joplin, they just weren't meant to be in the world too long. Lotta pain going on in those people.

I first got into Bill Monroe because The Kentucky HeadHunters did a remake of "Walk Softly On This Heart Of Mine." Those old bluegrass guys are some skilled musicians.

9. I love that stuff
I got into most of it by way of alt-country bands like Uncle Tupelo; they are my favorite band of all-time and it was a revelation to listen to people like George Jones, Hank Williams, Lefty Frizzell, Bill Monroe for the first time. To me they are just as Punk as Black Flag or Husker Du just for the fact that they they all sang w/ absolute honesty; like you said, you can hear and more importantly, FEEL the pain in their voices.

14. Lefty can handle his shit too
George Jones is a walking God. My mom got to see him in concert in Great Falls, MT about 10 years ago, she was absolutely giddy. I grew up on all of that music.

21. Haven't set foot in the US since 2001
Before 9/11. It's going to be very weird when I finally do cross the border again; almost like "Stranger In A Strange Land"..

When you consider that every song has a theme of death, loss, and confinement.

...and I'd put the movie itself in my personal all-time top 5.

6. No doubt
Ralph's voice in that song is so evocative. It gives me chills, too.

Have I told you lately that you have great taste in music? ;)

23. If someone had told me before I saw the movie that there would
be a scene of singing and dancing Ku Klux Klukkers, I would have laughed and thought it was a parody.

In truth, that scene scared the bejabbers out of me! :scared:
