16. Have fun!
The jet-lag between Europe and the US always gets to me. Going to Europe isn't much of a problem, but upon returning to the US I'm always zonked for about three days.

Once again, enjoy!

no problem going to the States, just getting up really early for a couple of days. But going back to Europe I try to stay awake as long as possible to sleep through the first night.

19. My solution is this:
As teaching is considered the third most stressful job in the US, my doctor provides me with a prescription for valium. So, I take two, drink a beer and sleep the whole way over. Usually the departing flights from the US leave late in the day, so for me it's just like waking up in the morning upon arrival, which is usually about 9:30 - 10:00 in Europe.

:hi:

49. One of my irrational phobias is being sealed up
So I try and make the time as bearable as possible. This past June when my students and I were in Berlin we went to the top of the TV tower. Unfortunately there were no stairs, so into the elevator I went (with teeth clenching). The elevator operator packed it tighter than a can of sardines. Luckily I was against the wall so I was able to grab the handrail and squeeze until we made it to the top. I believe there are some indentations in the rail from my grip. The ride to the top (300 metres above street level) was so fast that it was over before I knew it (phew!). Once I was at the top I was OK. But then came the ride down. Fast, but we were still packed like sardines.

Talking about jet lag... When I came home from my tour of duty in the Western Pacific, I had to endure an 18 hour flight which took off at 1800 and landed at 1730 on the same day. Yes, we landed 30 minutes before we ever took off on the same day! It took me two weeks to get back to normal (days were night and vice versa).

you're going to have a blast! and speaking french will make it that much better, imho. they LOOOOOVE it when yanks do that.

and just one simple rule until you get adjusted: one glass of wine to two glasses of water. works every time, at least if you're a 185lb male. your mileage (or would that be kilometerage?) will vary. :P
