DISH subscribers--whaddya think?? I'm about to make the decision
to switch from cable...talked to a guy last night (email chat) and got most questions answered.

Looking for any last minute comments about the service....

I have a question, though....LINK TV is gone, right? Any good news/intl. stations? I'm looking at the 120 station package....

1. Well, I don't have dish because I hear that reception is tough
in very tree-lined areas.... which certainly describes my neighborhood... but maybe that doesn't apply in your sitch...

6. Have them come out and do a signal test
It works great where I am and my house sits in the middle of 5 heavily wooded acres.

2. Direct TV has Link TV still
DirectTV has Link TV, and Dish has FreeSpeech TV (I think)

I like DirectTv, heard good things about dish, but the most important advancement you should get is a DVR. Tivo is great, others swear by other brands, but you cant beat skipping commercials!

5. Dish still has LinkTV
Edited on Fri Jul-29-05 12:17 PM by LouisianaLiberal
I switched when Murdoch bought controlling shares of DirecTV. I have been very happy with Dish - signal goes out only when the sky is near black, unlike Direct - but they may only apply to my area. But for me the best thing about Dish is FreeSpeechTV. Amy Goodman alone is reason enough to get Dish.

7. We have very few trees here in Las Cruces!! How long is it out
when it goes out???

We get static on cable and had a roll on one channel for ages. Comcast upraded, still occasional static. We've had occasional "outs" with it as well.

When Dish goes out...how long it it out for???
Is it better to get a contract? Seems like service is better and there's the insurance included....

10. It rarely goes out for more than a few seconds.
It was out for an hour once, but I have a feeling we get a lot more rain in Louisiana that you do in Las Cruses! You really shouldn't have any problems with reception because even here it rarely goes out. You can get a second, larger dish that allows you to view German and French programming, and there are a number of university channels, with the best being UCTV, which has a lot of lectures by progressive academics. I travel alot, and can put the service on hold when I'm out of town. All in all, I think its much better than DirecTV.

8. Just got it and LOVE IT!
The main reason we dumped cable was the reception was crappy.

The other reason is that our building (built in the 70's) was not cable wired. That means the main cable came in through the entry way closet and run under the carpet.

When we but in our new tile we could not run the cable under the tile so we either had to:

1. Rip holes in the walls or

2. Get a Dish.

The Dish won.

9. DISH has been great.
Got it when VOOM went down in April. Lost signal often with VOOM but the HD was awesome. Rarely lose signal with DISH - must be a very bad storm to go out. Has Link and FSTV. HD signal is adequate. So, technically I think it is as good as anything. The rest is about packages and receivers so read closely.
