Hungry For Ratings, Anderson Cooper To Cover Niger Famine

CNN, attempting to enhance its reputation as the news channel that presents information that matters, is sending its primetime anchor Anderson Cooper to Niger, where he will join CNN Africa correspondent Jeff Koinange to cover the U.N. airlift of more than 44 tons of food to the famine-stricken African nation. Cooper will air his programs from the Maradi area of the country where tens of thousands of Nigeriens are said to be starving.

_______

BTW, I do appreciate that CNN will cover the famine - I think that's important. But I read that first sentence and I think to myself "ABOUT FUCKING TIME YOU DO YOUR JOB"

1. What? Is Niger the only way he can fly into Aruba?
I'm sure the Niger trip is just a layover on his way to Aruba to cover the real news.

2. If you read Joe Wilson's book - Niger is suppose to be a beautiful country
Wilson (husband of Valerie Plame) had his first position working at the Niger embassy. That's why he is such an authority about the yellowcake industry over there

3. You can't "enhance" something you don't have
CNN wants silicon reputation implants, I guess, but they can't enhance the reputation they threw away last decade. THey have to start over if they want to be more than a tabloid/entertainment rag. Niger's a start, though sending Matt Cooper there to host his shows in a different location won't do much. It's the shows that matter.

And why not start closer to home? Why not report on what does matter? Presidential treason. This thing that's called everything from a war to struggle in Iraq. I think CNN can find a lot of serious news, if they have an actual desire to do so.

Fucking fluff pimps.

4. No Kidding About Time To Cover It
Of course, I must take some responsibility for being so wrapped up in the all Dubya's scandals that I haven't really been paying attention to the rest of the world, I think we all should. I can't believe this wasn't covered on some other news sources.

But I read this article the other day about how bad the situation is in these camps where people come looking for food and how they give the children color coded wristbands to triage them - the most optimistic cases will probably make it another week without food, so they try to help the more critical first.

If possible, we should all donate to our favorite famine relief agency. I chose C.A.R.E. because they have a four star rating from Charity Navigator, a privacy policy & no religious affiliation. But there are others - I know Oxfam and Doctors Without Borders are helping.
