Betty was the less glamorous but more sensible middle class girl as opposed to the spoiled, upper class Veronica.

I always like to imagine Archie growing up and marrying Betty and being happy with her, while Reggie married Veronica and still had to pay alimony after the divorce even though she came to the marriage with a lot more money.

Of course, Veronica is a Republican.
