Okay, this is ridiculous, I think I need to move.
The only problem is I can't afford to.

But this apartment, as much as I love it, is becoming too much of a pain in the ass because of neighbors and totally shitty soundproofing between apartments.

This is worse than a fucking Motel 6. I can hear my goddamn neighbor sneeze for Christ's sake.

I just wrote an e-mail to the property management asking if there is a different unit (at the end of the hall with a neighbor on only one side) available or if they can do some additional soundproofing (which I seriously doubt).

For something they try to market as "luxury apartments" they have a fuck of a lot to learn.

And to think I was happy hear for a year, now I'm just so pissed off it's pathetic.

:grr: :grr:

1. Might I suggest a room fan
I have the same problem with noise but I don't want to move because I have a great price with my own washer/dryer.

So I put a room fan in my bedroom and it drowns out most of the noise in the sleeping area.

BTW, I use to live in an apartment that was so bad with noise that I could hear my neighbors have sex. And I think she was faking it too!

2. Take them up on the sound proofing first thing. Maybe you can
get them to spring for a white noise machine.

They will do what they can below the cost moving you to a different unit. So ask for everything and you may just get the move.

6. I don't think a white noise machine would get rid of the sounds of
neighbors talking about baseball and the sound of the Andy Griffith Show theme being pumped through the wall at full volume.

3. We're going through the same thing.
The people above us are so damn loud, we can't stand it. The people before them weren't loud at all. We're talking 3 am dropping shit and the such.

We had some very heavy rains (ok... heavy for Los Angeles) that caused the roots of the trees in our apartment area (it is an outdoor-style apartment complex) to bust through the planter boxes and through several pipes. They are now doing construction to fix all the damage.

Over the past two years, we regularly get the water shut off because they have incrediable pipe problems.

The underground parking gates are always getting stuck.

The drawers in our bathroom are falling in (and no, we don't have much in them) becuse all the supports are falling apart.

Two of the stove burners don't work.

We had a wonderful on-site mainance man, but he had to quit because after four years of service, they still refused to give him any benefits and cut back his time off to ONE day a month (that means he worked 29 or30 days a month... period.) Since he was the only maitance worker they had, he was on call all the time. Anytime of the day or night, we could call him. We never did, but I know of others who did call him at 3 in the morning to fix something.

And amazingly, they have raised the rent three times in the past two years.

We are now working hard on looking for a new place to move, but it's hard to collect first month, last month and a deposit.

4. The sad thing is this is all new construction. I was the first resident

of this particular unit.

However, I just found a place around the corner that is doing the same thing (taking an old mill building and renovating it into apartments.

They are only asking first month's rent to move in and a $500 deposit to hold the unit. They won't be ready for occupation until September, but I'm going to go look at their show units tomorrow night.

I'd have to break the lease here, but I think that my numerous complaints about noise that have gone unresolved will be sufficient grounds to break a lease without penalty.

Plus, heating and AC in these units are included in the rent, so although the rent would be a tad higher than I'm paying now, my biggest utility bill would be gone.

5. I'm sure you've already checked that the place around the corner takes
pets.

Best of luck, ET. Keep us posted.

I'm sorry. I know your situation's not funny, but it just reminded me of that scene in "office space" and made me crack up...

13. We had a total horror story with a woman MD who lived upstairs. She
was a complete whack job and we eventually got into an outright war with her over her stomping around on hardwood floors. It almost ruined our health. Ironically she moved the month after we moved.
Big lesson learned for people like us who are sensitive to noise - stay as far away from the walls, ceilings and yards/porches of your fellow man that your pocketbook can afford.
Now we have an ideal set up - two floor apt - no one upstairs and stairway between us and only same floor neighbor.
Only problem is the $$$ of it but for your mental health - its worth it too pay a little more.

I don't mean to be pessimistic but we found our only solution was to cut our losses and get the hell out - just chalk it up to experience and a lesson learned.

Our "bad" place was really cute, too.

in the morning when I was taking a dump. I hated it. I felt like he was competing with me.

15. That's the problem with old converted buildings
you have to make sure the developers put effort into soundproofing and weatherproofing. Friends of my parents just bought a loft condo up in Lowell (their kids live in the immediate area) and they have had similar complaints. Can you afford to buy up there? You may have some control over soundproofing, amenities, etc.
