My brush with drunken celebrity
Back when Tommy Kramer was a QB for the Vikings, he used to party at a lot of the bars on the "494 strip" (a section of the frontage road to I-494 in suburban Minneapolis). I was with a group of coworkers at one of the fine establishments. I was walking to my table, behind the barstools, when Tommy Kramer fell off his stool and knocked me over. He expected me (who at the time weighed perhaps 100 lbs less than he did) to apologize to him. I told him to go fuck himself.

1. Looks like that he was already fucked up
Perhaps it would have been more accurate instead to UNFUCK himself.

He is from San Antonio, and I knew people that knew him, and they all said he was a drunk.

9. Do you remember that one interview he did with KQRS in the 80s?
He was on the morning show, and they called him before 8 am for the interview. he sounded completely sh!tfaced and didn't make any sense at all. it was a complete joke.

his manager at the time made up a lame-ass excuse that he had been up all night with his infant child and was "out of it" because he didn't get enough sleep. but you could tell he was stinking drunk anyway.

i could also tell you the story about how ex-Viking Keith Millard trashed his brand new Camaro at the Hardee's drive-thru in Mankato during training camp, after he came out of the Albatross bar completely tanked, but that's another story...

10. I remember that interview
I was listening and could not believe my ears...

Oh yeah, Keith Millard, now there was another piece of work :grr:

I can't imagine why Paul Tagliabue had such a problem with the show "Playmakers". Truth hit a little close to home??? :grr:

12. I ran into Huey Lewis a couple times when he was really drunk.
He's pretty tall.

I also drank some of Wavy Gravy's Zima once. Although I must say, I was quite disappointed to find a hero of the counterculture drinking such a weenie drink.

22. More or less. I'm originally from the Midwest, but I lived in Marin for
quite a while. Then rent got nuts so I moved up to Sonoma County.

16. I don't even consider sports stars celebrities.
Edited on Sun Aug-07-05 01:58 AM by Kire
I don't watch sports, so unless they've got an album out or are married to a Spice Girl, I don't even know for whom to "celebrate."

18. I have had a number of brushes with local celebrity here.
Used to hang out at First Avenue, and often bumped into Prince. Clues to the clueless, if "Purple Rain" has any autobiographical truth to it, Prince's messed up family of origin has clues for what a jerk he acts like now.

One of my favorite brushes with fame happened a number of times at a warehouse club that I used to belong too (yes it is owned by Walmart, but we did not have Costco here back then). I often saw former Minnesota Twins 1B Kent Hrbek, with a flatbed cart in the frozen food section. Hrbek had suffered a lot of criticism during his last years as a Twin for how much weight he had gained, and I found it ironic that he literally had a full cart of frozen food. I won a radio contest for telling that story!
