Ah, Otis Redding - you died much too soon.
Cranked up the CD today. Try a Little Tenderness is perfection - wish there was a longer version. These Arms of Mine, Sad Song, I've Been Loving You Too Long...

1. Yes he did...
whenever I ask someone, "Who's your favorite soul singer?" I always qualify the question with, "...besides Otis Redding"
Otis is hors de combat (because it's not fair to ask anyone to measure up to his standard of excellence)

2. Which CD do you have?
I ask this because you expressed a desire for a longer version of "Try A Little Tenderness." Rhino's four-CD OTIS! boxed set features a version that is a good 30 seconds longer than what has appeared on previous CD comps.

Just thought you'd like to know! :yourock:

3. It's The Very Best of Otis Redding.
I didn't know there was a four CD of Otis. Did he record that much? I remember when he died. I was in 6th grade. I also had the Aretha 45's going. I guess it's kinda funny to think of a little white girl in East Tennessee listening to all this R&B. I remember my mother yelling at me to turn that garbage down. So I would turn the volume down on my record player with the pennies taped to the arm to keep the needle from skipping.

5. If you're that big a fan, you need the boxed set!

Trust me, there ain't one second of filler on any of the four CDs. You can order the box here:

4. Otis, my MAN!
You was just about to burn up the world, son. They can say what they will about Hendrix rearranging time and space at Monterey Pop (which he did), but when that black man from the Georgia woods got up in front of the mighty Stax band, it was all over!

Big amps and psychedelic light shows and love beads and good acid didn't mean a thang up beside the sweat you broke in the first eight seconds.

You took they ass to church that night!

6. I've seen OR's performance at Monterey

Back around 1989, I attended a midnight screening of JIMI HENDRIX: LIVE AT MONTEREY. As good as that performance was, I unexpectedly also got to see Otis Redding's performance, which they tacked on to stretch the film out to 85 or so minutes. Man, did the Big O kick ass that night!

And yet a few months later, he was dead. What a fucking tragedy.
