61. from $2.69 tp $3.15 in 3 hours (Pittston PA)
guys at work were up in arms -- coming into work a local gas station had prices for regular at $2.69 - about an hour later it was up to $2.79 - by noon it was $3.15

Yeah, I know oil rigs and refineries were hit bad by Katrina -- but some how I can't shake the feeling of MAJOR PRICE GOUGING is occuring

for the past few months we've been given the excuse of high gas prices is due to:

1. lack of refining capacity
2. market speculation

yesterday - bush* agreed to open up oil reserves... Question: if there are not enough refineries and prices are "market driven" - then what good will the oil reserves do to lower prices?

Well, it won't lower prices, it may stem gas shortages a bit -- get ready for gas lines

Demand a receipt for that purchase and be sure to keep it too! I would and I would put it on my credit card if at all possible so you can contest that charge when they are found guilty of price gouging!

You can and you will fight these greedy bastards and you will win!

15. I'm in Athens, GA. I filled up for just $2.99 before the prices went up
too much more at the local stations. Another Athens DUer reported $3.75/GAL in Athens at a Chevron on W. Broad St. My husband had to go to several stations to find gas. He called his ex wife in Atlanta
to warn her and she said it was crazy and expensive.

29. My sister told me $3.64 in a small town outside Atlanta
but she had been out of the house since 7:00 so who knows how bad its getting there. They also had lines of an hour or two and were limited to 10 gallons. This is an area that had tornadoes yesterday - some 40 homes were declared un-habitable.

Edited on Wed Aug-31-05 07:36 PM by CountAllVotes
luckily ... when they were expecting Katrina would hit - I gassed up and topped off too. Price was $2.99 at that time (last day for Discover 5% cash back on gasoline is today - so too late so I really paid $2.83 a gallon).

I only needed less than 5 gallons so it was not too much luckily.

Limit your trips, carpool is you can, stock up on items if you have a place to store them.

If you haven't gassed up yet, you'd really better do it ASAP because it will only go up in price!

7. And it's amazing that the station is pumping from the same shipment it got
days ago, so there's no need for them to raise their prices. It's not like their costs went up. Certainly their next shipment will cost more, but while the gas in their reservoir, it should be illegal to just keep jacking up prices all they want every couple hours.

69. In their defense...
...they are flying blind, too, to some degree. It makes perfect sense tht prices should go up when the supply is threatened. We'll face weeks of lines and "out of gas" signs, I'm afraid.

Five bucks a gallon this early is gouging, though, I believe.

14. Yuppers. Did it today. Gas shot up .15 overnight in Eastern WA
Called my family in SC and told them about the shortages in Atlanta. My mom drives over 40 miles each way to her job---her boyfriend does the same. They already have to fill up 2x's per week just to make it. Unfortunately, she can't afford to move, and there are no jobs that would pay what she makes in her town. There is no public transportation. They're fucked.

I called them and my grandma today and told them to GET GAS NOW and DO NOT WAIT until tomorrow because it may be too late, or too expensive, or both.

I have a tiny little Mazda that gets about 30mpg highway. Today it took over $16 to put in 1/2 tank.

Hubby put in 1/2 tank yesterday and I topped it off today. Today at 1:30pm it was .15 higher than it was at 4pm yesterday. Cheapest gas in town, and there was a line of cars waiting to get in. Alot of people were filling up their car AND gas containers.

Never seen nothing like it.

According to denvergasprices.com, the price at Bradleys, a cheap gas place, was 2.63 at 10 am today, then by 2:30 it was 2.79 when I filled up and they were changing it to 2.89 as I left.

23. Because, my friend, panic is undignified. Besides,
the people who panic are creating the exact shortages they are afraid of.

If all the cars in the country are now carrying full tanks instead of half-full ones as usual, THAT's what's going to dreate a shortage.

I give up trying to talk reason to anyone.

Actually.

But I see I'm whistling in the wind here, so I'll shut up. Everyone else seems to favor running around like chickens with their heads cut off, so who am I to be a contrarian?

I'm more than a little disappointed; I thought DUers were more levelheaded and intelligent than this constant panic is indicating them to be, as a group.

Sorry to be contrary, but this is getting depressing, and I think it's time for me to shut the computer off for the night before people start to get angry with me for disagreeing with "the wisdom of the crowd."

35. Redstone: It's no longer a panic, it's an investment
Buy now, or pay later.

Granted, it will go down, but only after Bush is out of office, and someone with some common sense comes in - recognizes the ENORMOUS debt we're in - raises taxes across the board in order to balance our budget - gas being one of them. Granted, none of our fuel tanks will last that long, but in the short term, buy now, suffer later.

38. My friend, you don't get it. If everyone had just stayed calm,
stayed home, and not joined in the panic, that $3.50 per gallon gasoline would have gone begging for customers.

And the price would have gone down. supply and demand, and all that.

But it's too late for that now, and I'm tired of repeating myself.

See you in a couple of days.

40. I get what you're saying.
It's a collective action problem. I'm too muddy headed right now to give a lucid definition of these, but the canonical example is the Prisoner's Dilemma. In essence it's a situation where when everyone's looking after #1 they wind up more screwed than if they cooperated, but since the cooperation of others cannot be assumed they wind up looking after #1 anyway.

Have a good one. :toast:

As I was leaving work today, one station was 2.99, the other one was 3.05 and in the process of changing as I drove by. I had already considered gassing up on the way home. Yet, I still had 1/4 tank, and I so much hate to be late arriving home, and thus starting my actual life (work and commute not counting as "life") that I put it off until tommorow. 54. This is the worst it's ever been---ever!
Fucking unbelievable. My stomach is turning at these prices. and I thought that prices five weeks ago at $2.27 a gallon were out of control.

Today, the prices in my area where shockingly still averaging about 2.79 a gallon, but I know tomorrow that they'll be up over 3 bucks.

63. The lines were ridiculously long at all the stations
in Marietta, Kennesaw and Woodstock, GA yesterday afternoon. I was not going to sit in line and waste gas just to get gas. So this morning, I left the house at 5:45 a.m. and did not have to sit in any line. Of course, most of the gas stations were closed because they were out of gas. But I got lucky and found one station that was open and had gas. No lines, just three cars at the pumps. But of course, I had to pay $3 a gallon. I had a half tank already. But just to fill up it cost $26.

60. My mom is having a picnic and I'm skipping it
That'll be $30 worth of gas driving to it and I'm in conversation mode.

Worse thing is my step-father is going in for 33 radiation treatments and it's over on the West Shore of Harrisburg. What a crappy time for the gas prices to go through the roof!

64. Perspective: I've lived in countries where gas was consistently
$5 or more per gallon. Places where that's the normal price, across the board. Americans don't know how good they have it -- particularly unfortunate because this insulated petrochemical ethnocentrism is key to the rise of atrocities like the Hummer and other superfluous SUVs. Heck, my Brittanic brethren would probably love to get hold of petrol as cheap as $5 a gallon.

I also ride a motorcycle so, although I balked at the $2.79 per gallon that I just paid tonight, the cost of my six-gallon-capacity tank is not so bad when you consider that it covers a week's worth of commuting. So, in short, I could thumb my nose at y'all by virtue of my being conveyed rapidly about the landscape on a vehicle far more economical than pretty much any car but the Prius (we pay in lots of other ways, not least of which is the tendency of oblivious car drivers to try to kill us at every turn) and because I am contemptuous of Amewicans whining abowt dere widdle wawwets being hit so hard by gas prices still the envy of much of the rest of the world.

But the reality is that I'm pretty disturbed by all of this because, apart from the immediate economic effect and the prospect of walking to and from work each day when and if the gas supply bottoms out (I love to walk, but my job's draining enough that the six or seven miles each way is hardly optimal, especially in the current heat), there's too likely to be Bad Stuff associated with this rapid price increase. People go crazy enough in this violent country without adding further provocation...and, again, I reference the heat still rather obvious in most parts of the country. And then there's the whole Bush-oil thing. It's not good. It sucks.

The only positive I can think of? Pretty simple: suffer, you Hummer-owning f***wits...

65. i have lived in one of those countries too. ONE HUGE DIFFERENCE
all of those countries (Germany in my case) have incredible PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

frankly, you rarely NEED a car. hell you can buy a euro-pass and travel the entire continent practically via public rail.

the europeans have done it right. we, have done it completely ass backwards and have created a society that is 90% dependent on big oil and PRIVATE transportation. you have an excellent point but lets try and compare apples to apples.

66. Not disputing that these prices are terrible,
just that it's not the end of the world as we know it. And, yeah, MOST other countries have better public transportation. Not all, but most...certainly most of the 'developed' nations.

There's no valid reason that US cities and regional clusters of cities and towns couldn't have the same. The whole dismantling of the Los Angeles public transit system back at the start of the autombile's rise, to name one instance, is a fascinating piece of history that indicates beyond any doubt that the dependence of America on private car traffic was the wholly intentional result of a particularly cynical conspiracy. There have been other options for the US but the people who own the place decided to play it, for now, another (more harmful, but more profitable) way. It'll change for the better only when it suits them.

70. Gov Easley's statement 8?31
Gov Easley issued a statement last night about conserving gas and eliminating unnecessary trips, including Labor Day travel.

I have to get gas today; I'm down to 1/4 of a tank. I'm going to try to get it at Costco. But since I got laid off, I haven't driven that much anyway. A tankfull is lasting me about 1 and 2/3 weeks.

********************************
THE TWO MAJOR PIPELINES THAT FURNISH GASOLINE TO MANY STATES, INCLUDING NORTH CAROLINA, HAVE BEEN AFFECTED BY HURRICANE KATRINA AND ARE CURRENTLY WITHOUT ELECTRICITY. THEY SERVICE NORTH CAROLINA AND 8-10 OTHER STATES.

90 PERCENT OF OUR GAS COMES FROM THESE PIPELINES AND RIGHT NOW THEY ARE NOT OPERATIONAL.

SUPPLIERS GENERALLY HAVE A WEEK OR SO OF SUPPLY. THEY HAVE BEEN SHUT DOWN SINCE THE HURRICANE.

THE PIPELINES NEED ELECTRIC SUPPLY AND THE REFINERIES THAT PRODUCE GASOLINE NEED TO MAKE URGENT REPAIRS ALSO ARE WITHOUT ELECTRICITY. THE REFINERIES THAT PRODUCE GASOLINE NEED TO MAKE URGENT REPAIRS.

CONSEQUENTLY, WE DO NOT KNOW THE EXTENT OF THE PROBLEM, BUT WE DO KNOW THAT THERE WILL BE A SIGNIFCANT LOSS OF GASOLINE IN THE SOUTHEAST, AT LEAST IN THE SHORT TERM UNTIL THE ELECTRICITY IS RESTORED.

THIS IS NOT ONLY A STATE PROBLEM, THIS IS ALSO A REGIONAL AND A NATIONAL PROBLEM. WE ARE HOPING THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY WILL TAKE SOME ACTION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. I HAVE TRIED TO GET DIRECTION FROM DOE BUT THEY HAVE NOT YET RESPONDED.

IN THE MEANTIME, I AM ASKING ALL NORTH CAROLINIANS TO CONSERVE GAS. SOME STATIONS ARE ALREADY OUT. WAIT FOR MORE INFORMATION BEFORE MAKING LABOR DAY TRAVEL PLANS.

WE ARE TAKING STEPS TO ENSURE THAT EMERGENCY VEHICLES HAVE THE SUPPLIES THAT THEY NEED, POLICE, FIRE AND RESCUE.

I AM IMMEDIATELY SUSPENDING ALL NON-ESSENTIAL STATE GOVERNMENT TRAVEL. I AM ASKING STATE EMPLOYEES TO CARPOOL WHEREVER POSSIBLE.

I AM ALSO ASKING ALL OUR CITIZENS TO BE SMART ABOUT THEIR FUEL CONSUMPTION.

I AM ASKING THEM TO CARPOOL IF THEY CAN AND TO LIMIT NON-ESSENTIAL ROAD TRIPS.

WE ARE NOT OUT OF GAS, BUT WE ARE RUNNING LOW.

WE MUST TAKE STEPS TO CONSERVE OUR RESOURCES WHILE WE LEARN THE FULL EXTENT OF THE PROBLEMS AND WHILE WASHINGTON WORKS TOWARD A REGIONAL AND NATIONAL STRATEGY.

WITH CAREFUL USE OF PRECIOUS FUEL, CONSUMERS CAN HELP US WEATHER THIS LATEST STORM.

NORTH CAROLINA UNDERSTANDS HURRICANES. WE HAVE BEEN THROUGH THEM AND WE KNOW THAT WE WILL WEATHER THIS ONE AS WE HAVE IN THE PAST. WE KNOW THEY CAUSE DISTRUPTION. WE JUST NEED TO KNOW AS MUCH AS WE CAN AND PLAN.
