Gas Electric Hybrid Future Car : University of California students build a high-mileage, low-pollution car.

Honda makes a hybrid gas and electric car called the Insight, which costs about $18,000. This car was designed to get better mileage than traditional cars. It is a simplified parallel hybrid. The electric motor is coupled to the engine where the flywheel usually is, in a system called "Integrated Motor Assist." The electric motor provides extra power when accelerating or going up hill, and does regenerative braking, capturing energy and storing it back in the batteries. The motor also starts the engine. It is more fuel efficient becuase it has a reduced weight, small engine, and aerodynamic design.

Honda recently began making a Hybrid Civic, which runs much like the Insight.
