Major League Baseball Rookie Hits Grand Slam In First Ever At Bat
<snip>

MIAMI -- This was simply beyond Jeremy Hermida's wildest fantasies. On the first at-bat of his major league career, he did something no one had done.

Hermida had a pinch-hit grand slam in the seventh inning off the St. Louis Cardinals' Al Reyes in the Marlins' 10-to-5 loss Wednesday night.

He had been called up by Florida from the minors only about three hours before the game.

He's the third player in baseball history to hit a grand slam in his first game, the second to do it in his first at-bat -- and the first to pull it off as a pinch-hitter.

Hermida is a 21-year-old outfielder who batted for pitcher Brian Moehler with Florida trailing 10-nothing. He swung at a fastball, took a ball low, then homered to right field, some 373 feet away.

The fan who caught the homer returned it to the Marlins' bullpen, in exchange for a couple of signed baseballs.

1. and it's all downhill from there!
how can you top that? Unless it is hitting a game winning grand slam in the World Series?

2. That's pretty darned impressive.
Good for him! :)

Thank goodness the Cardinals still won, or I'd be less generous in my praise. :P

4. He was called up 3 hours before the game ...
Unbelievable.

The opportunity to even bat with the bases loaded is rare, but to have it happen on your first ML at bat, as a pinch hitter ... yikes.

Cheers
Drifter
