Anti-rape condom unveiled

"A South African inventor has unveiled a new anti-rape female condom that hooks onto an attacker's penis and aims to cut one of the highest rates of sexual assault in the world.

"Nothing has ever been done to help a woman so that she does not get raped and I thought it was high time," Sonette Ehlers, 57, said of the "rapex", a device worn like a tampon that has sparked controversy in a country used to daily reports of violent crime.

Police statistics show more than 50,000 rapes are reported every year, while experts say the real figure could be four times that as they say most rapes of acquaintances or children are never reported.

Ehlers said the "rapex" hooks onto the rapist's skin, allowing the victim time to escape and helping to identify perpetrators.

"He will obviously be too preoccupied at this stage," she told reporters in Kleinmond, a small holiday village about 100 kilometres east of Cape Town. "I promise you he is going to be too sore. He will go straight to hospital."

The device, made of latex and held firm by shafts of sharp barbs, can only be removed from the man through surgery which will alert hospital staff, and ultimately, the police, she said.

6. It's a female condom.
She puts it on. He can't take it off without medical help.

How about a high-class Latin name? Vagina dentata

5. Holy crap. Uh... I have mixed emotions about this.
I like the idea of the barbs... don't get me wrong ... what I don't like is the idea of a woman living in a world where rape is so common that the discomfort of having something like that inside you all the time is outweighed by fear. ALSO... I would prefer something that would attach to a man's penis BEFORE it gets anywhere NEAR where it would have to get with this thing.

12. I agree with you basically
But rape isn't just an issue of discomfort - we're talking about very possible death given the rate of AIDS infection in S. Africa.

As I say - I too would like something that grabs the man's bits WAY before they get near her, but this is a small improvement.

20. agreed
it sucks bad for this discomfort, but women in South Africa have to face both a very high AIDS rate and one of the highest sexual assault rates in the world

34. And that thing will increase AIDS rates.
Making holes in a penis while it's inside the woman-what do you think that is going to do to AIDS rates?

8. Wasn't this a Bob & Tom Radio Show bit?
I think theirs was the "Vagamatic" which was essentially a personal device to puree the offending member... again, "life" imitates "art."

Yick.

I'd imagine this is extremely uncomfortable for the woman to wear...

9. But couldn't the rapist will make the victim remove it at knifepoint...?
...BEFORE the actual rape occurs?

And he's gonna be REAL PISSED if he gets latched onto by one of those things.

11. After Word Gets Out...
... I imagine that rapists would start checking first to see if it was "safe".

Could this device also be used by someone wanting revenge against a husband or boyfriend? Or just out of pure meanness?

15. I think that's wonderful!!
Since a man won't be able to tell whether or not the woman is wearing it, than maybe they'll keep their pricks to themselves and the sexual violence against women will ease in Africa. Hopefully they'll make this condom very inexpensive for women. Or better yet, hand them out at clinics.

Something has to be done about the violence against women in Africa (one of many places) and the subsequent growing AIDS populations.

16. This thing is an EXTREMELY bad idea
Rape is a crime of violence that uses sex as a weapon, not a crime of sex.

Now that they've had a press conference to unveil the Rapex, every guy in the world knows this thing exists--which means every rapist in the world now knows to check for boobytraps. And exactly what do you think's gonna happen if a rapist finds this thing inside of you? Tip his hat and say "I see you protected yourself against me, sorry to disturb you. Have a nice evening"? I think not.

Let's now pretend we got a dumb rapist who doesn't check for Rapexes and gets stuck by one. He's going to get very concerned for his dick then beat and/or kill the woman who injured it.

And besides, let's look at the reality of this device: to get it to work, you still have to be raped!

30. agreed, bad idea to piss off a rapist
in full attack mode. This is why they tell victims to go for the eyes, you can kick someone hopped up on adrenaline full in the balls and it won't slow him down, only piss him off.

19. Exactly
That actually sounds like an American solution: Put a band-aid over a cracked dam.

It doesn't stop the violence before, during, and after the rape. It will get worse with one of those.

21. cool device but
I would like to see it in the form of a taser instead of barbs. With barbs, you may just fuel the fire and end up dead. If you can taser him, you would hopefully subdue him.

Watched a show on this topic a few months ago. Other inventions:

22. Barbs=Bleeding=HIV transfer
I don't think this was fully thought through. When an erect penis is cut, it bleeds horribly. Since SA is in a region with the worlds highest HIV rates, using this thing means you're going to have a potentially HIV+ man bleeding INSIDE your vagina.

Sorry, but that doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

29. A very good point, but...
I'm not sure how to this delicately, but AIDS can be transfered through other bodily fluids.

In addition, it really depends on the construction of the condom. I doubt that the man would keep his penis in there. He's likely to pull out quickly and then I assume that the condom would catch the blood.

24. So in a nutshell I would have to wear this thing day in and day out
I mean, it not like I can tell my would-be raper - can you hold on a second while I put in a female condom before you rape me. So this thing is useless if I wear it everyday.

I think I would just rather carry around a can of mace - much easier I would suspect!

28. I think it's the idea that's the deterrent.
Not a real solution, but telling would-be rapists that vaginas bite is something that might frighten some people.

There are ways around it. Obviously, rapists can check. I guess. But, I don't think it's a bad idea to spread the idea that victimizing others is dangerous to one's penis. :)

26. Sad it has come to this.
But, if women want to wear one, they have every right to do it. It's the rapist's fault if he puts something in there.

I imagine a thing like that will increase the transmission of STDs, cause it will make holes in the penis.
WTF is this woman thinking? All they need in South Africa are more STDs.

36. too easy to circumvent
preprobe with a dildo(or whatever) and the protection is gone. The chastity belts (some light almost uncuttable spacerelated material i can't recall) sounded far more effective.

haa haa to rapists caught that way, sorry for the dudes who might get lured into this penistrap by malicious females.

39. This is a good idea, but I'm worried about one thing.
What if a woman has consensual sex with a guy, and she does that just to hurt him? I mean, maybe a woman has something against some guy, and does that as revenge or something. Outside of that, I think it's a darn good idea!
