I added up the numbers on the user profiles chart (where they say there are 1100 that begin with the letter A, etc.) and there were only 55,000 on that list. Banned members are not on that list. Plus when I checked some of the profiles on the list, they had registered in 2003 and only had 2 posts. Not tombstoned, but not active either, and I quickly found three or four like that. So I estimate something like 40,000 active members. Still larger than the city where I live.
