Folks, I think the tide is starting to turn. Just talked to my dear repug
friend....Friend/roommate from college, she was my maid of honor, she is my eldest's Godmother.

Very republican family. Her dad donated in the seven figure range to Repugs and was very, very close with GHWB and Cheney, as well as Gerald FOrd.

She herself worked in the White House with GHWB's administration.

I was in Target getting school supplies when she called me to rant about how much she hates *. She already was growing to because of the war, but she went on and on about what an asshole he is, how she hates him, how he is ruining the country, how she can't believe he didn't cut his vacation short, (like Clinton did) to arrange assistance.

I have to say, I was speechless.

Thank God. Maybe we will be okay.

1. I wrote to my fundy mom this morning.
I told her "see, this is what I've been trying to tell you. We need a real president."

She didn't dispute me at all.

20. whereas mine told me he is more than disappointed
and edespite being happy about saddam being gone, he realizes that we have an amateur moron. No, a trike-riding idiot in office, if I recall his exact words.

5. We are paying an awfully high price for these Republican epiphanies!
Edited on Thu Sep-01-05 02:14 PM by Totally Committed
Since when have so many people had to die before for lack of leadership before a politician is disavowed by those who voted for him/her?

THOUSANDS are dead and dying. THOUSANDS are disabled for the rest of their lives. THOUSANDS are homeless, starving, in need of medical attention, and thirsty.

And, NOW they decide Bush is unfit for the job they elected him for?

It's nice, and yes, maybe the tide is turning (maybe not), but we, as Americans, and as human beings are paying an awfully high price for their votes. A terrible price.

6. Recommended
and I think that makes 5, so we're on the Greatest page.

We, as Democrats, have to welcome these people with open arms. Now's not the time to play petty "we told you so" games. It's time to connect with these new converts and show them WHY the Dems program is better for EVERYONE-- not just rich white guys.

I really hate to say this, but this disaster just may be the start of the pendulum swinging back. People are starting to realize that there's a need for strong government programs-- especially those that protect the most vulnerable members of our society. The evidence is on full display in NOLA, and it doesn't get much clearer than that.

7. The parents @ my kids' group tennis lesson
last Friday were all talking about Bush - expressing their displeasure. And they were all very emotional about it. Usually, when people speak negatively about Bush in our neck of the woods it is done in a cautious & quiet way. These people didn't care who heard them.

12. Nice, but among the hard core: Bush didn't cause the weather
That's the new meme.

"LIEberals are blaming President Bush for the weather"

"Left-wingers think Bush should have stopped the hurricane"

"why are people living below sea level anyway?"

Anything but "yeah there's a huge leadership vacancy" or "yes, he cut funding to Army Corps of Engineers".....

This nonsense is certainly hardening the attitudes of all the non-Republicans in my office, however.

14. Nice try, but it's not gonna work
EVERYONE knows that Katrina was Mother Nature's doing. What matters is our government's response to it, which has been just abysmal. That's what we're ALL seeing, and that is the take-home message, despite what the spin doctors want to make of it.

21. One can only hope!
We have some real hard-heads around here. As I reported on another thread, a colleague made some comment via email today about "Oh great, now liberals are blaming him for the weather."

I replied "no, we're blaming him for....(and listed about 8 different things, including an embarrassing lack of leadership"

This asshole's only answer: "Waah"

We just have to keep reminding people why we're blaming Bush.

13. Talked to a hardcore RWer today who said the same thing
I couldn't believe my ears. This guy was 100% pro-war-in-Iraq in 2003. Now he's wondering what on Earth we are spending all that money on when we could be spending it HERE.

It's happening, my friends. It took a horrible tragedy like Katrina to make even the most oblivious Kool-Aid drinker wake up to one cold, hard fact: that the Bush Administration is NOT on our side; it never has been and never will be.

My sister came around, and another old friend of mine, who is breaking her Big Tobacoo career ties and GOP-voting habits to become a nurse.

We must welcome whatever help we can get.

vote for a Democrat; just out of curiousity.

19. She voted for Kerry in 2004. Bush in 2000
And her mom, who was entertained for dinner by the Cheneys voted for Kerry as well.

The war is what pushed them to vote for Kerry, and the issue with the Hurricane has created venom.

This is good news. I never, ever thought a woman who donated the amount she had to the rethugs would ever vote democratic. She is 76.
