Modern gentlemen prefer redheads and brunettes to the charms of blondes
Modern gentlemen prefer redheads and brunettes to the charms of blondes

By Maxine Frith, Social Affairs Correspondent
Published: 05 September 2005

It is a question that goes as far back as the origins of hair dye itself - do gentlemen really prefer blondes? The answer, it appears, is "no".

A study by researchers at City University in London found that men responded more positively to pictures of brunette and red-headed women than they did to those with blond hair.

Experts said that as relations between men and women have evolved, the male of the species has become more attracted by brains, represented in their psyche by brunettes, than the more physical charms of blond hair.

But stereotypes seem to persist in the male mind, with redheads seen as "fiery", brunettes as "stable" and blondes as "approachable".

1. Oh, that's good.
I'm not only last on men's list of attractiveness, I'm also without brains.

6. Well, just remember that any brunette who wanted to be a blonde...
could very easily be one. Just saying... (That's just like saying that all women with average-sized breasts really want to be big-breasted women, in my opinion. Not this woman!)

7. What about dark reddish blonde?
Depending on the light, I can look blonde, light brown, or red.

9. This redhead says "it's about time"
But, if we're recognized for our brains, what does hair color have to do with it?

Maybe the article should focus on the men rather than the women.

19. As a modern, semi-gentleman, I am pretty much owned by most women...
Hair color has little to do with it. An intelligent, attractive woman of any hair color, can knock me for a loop pretty damn easily. I'm like shooting fish in a barrel. :)

Wow, are you in for a surprise when you meet me....

However, I read in another article where people with black hair are seen as less intelligent. When I read that article, it smacked of racism to me.

23. l always had the impression
that men thought that redheads were less approachable. Some sort of mystique associated with them.

As a natural redhead, I've never really found men caring one way or another--in fact, they didn't care WHAT color hair a woman had, just as long as she had good sized boobs, long legs, a small waistline, and a bit of a "fast" nature. Afterall, my younger sister (by 5 years) drank, smoked, had sex with each and every man she met, and was a blonde. I personally, shorter, pudgy, with a high IQ and red hair, got zip all my life. Even now it's difficult for me to have men get past my outspokenness and intelligence, which I'm not afraid to show. Men might say they want something more, but in practice it doesn't always work out that way.
