What can you use in place of it? Soy Sause?

"Made from fermented soy beans, this reddish brown sauce is both sweet and spicy. It is almost always a combination of soybean paste, sugar, garlic and vinegar. The Chinese use Hoisin as a condiment and glaze for roasted meats, most commonly with Peking Duck. Ming uses it in marinades and grilled dishes. When adding to a dish, be sure to cook the hoisin in oil for a few minutes to rid it of the raw bean flavor."

hoisin sauce is thicker and sweeter than soy. I like the flavour. I don't see why you couldn't water it down a bit and substitute...

3. hoisin is hard to substitute
the flavor is sort of a savory BBQ sauce and it's much thicker than soy.
Using soy instead shouldn't ruin the dish. Hoisin is pretty easy to find in large supermarkets-- if they have a Chinese food shelf at all, they probably have hoisin.
