I used to believe in Government

but then I got a job at a State Organization, and cannot for the life of me wrap my head around how utterly, completely, and fully fucked up it is. I hate working here, I hate working for idiots, I hate seeing the sheer amount of wasted processes. I am surrounded by nepostism, uselessness, idiocy, incompentence, inneffiency, morons, and worse.

If I had my way, I'd Bolton this place so fucking fast you'd need a bulldozer to get everyone's stupid fucking asses out of their seats. Entire departments would be on the street.

No longer would people be shuffled around until they end up in a spot they can half handle. The musical jobs shit would cease immediately.

The "President" of the place has already resigned, but I'd cut her retirement offering by half for being such an incompetent, feeble, mindless waste.

All issues about who gets to park where, aside from Medical needs, would be stopped when your parking spot was pulled randomly.

There will be no more showing up at 8, taking a breakfast break between 9 and 10 am, taking a two hour lunch between 12 and 2, and leaving for home everyday at 4 ( 3 on Fridays ). Everyone will be expected to work the number of hours they are getting paid for.

Posting on DU while at work will be a fireable offense :evilgrin:

The problem isn't the sector-- it's the size of the organization. ANY large organization spawns its own bureaucracy. It takes me several weeks to get things done that would only take half a day in a small place.

The bigger an organization gets, the more inefficient it becomes.

If it wasn't for him the Tax Relief Program wouldn't even be computerized. He burnt out trying to supervise while dragging upper management into the new century at the same time. And he worked for the legislative branch. I can't imagine how bad it was on the Governor's side of things.

I finally received the title to my car and had to go to the DMV to have the lien removed so that I could have full title to my car. I arrived after work (about 4:30), took a number (#31) and a seat. As I began my wait, the number being served was 11. At 5:00pm sharp, the employees closed the doors, locked them so that no one could enter. The number being helped was 14 by this point. The DMV had to provide services to all those inside before they could close. Wow, you should have seen those DMV employees move through the line of waiting people! By closing time I was 17 spaces from being served, but I was out of the front door with a clear title by 5:20.

Oh well, here we go.

Here in NC we are now starting to see the consequences of the legislature/governor's actions. Minimal/no pay raises in about 10 years (1 year we got 4.25%, the rest were between 0 and 2%) along with raises in health insurance costs.

My group is about half staffed, and we now are seeing our inability to even hire straight out of school people (2 turned us down after we offered them the job). The good people are leaving to make 50% more money, and only the bad ones remain save a few who like the flexibility.

This will then lead to reduction in service to the public, who will begin clamoring when things are not done in a timely (for state govt) manner. The lawmakers will be left scratching their heads while unqualified people run the critical service departments and the entire state suffers under the crumbling infrastructure.

Thank God we are able to fund the No Child Left Behind mandate, so when these kids get out of school, they won't be able to think outside of the box either, and they can be the ones mis-leading the services, while those who can think differently will see through the sham of state employment.

And as I see it, it's about failing in the understanding of -- and the practice of -- basic principles (and those of work, teamwork, leadership, etc).

Size has something to do with it, and bureaucracy (which approaches inevitability above a certain size), and bad processes and systems -- and an out-of-touch (majority) culture -- but it comes down to values. For example, do you (as an organization or person) really believe in being efficient and effective -- or are these just words that you mouth. Because if you really do believe in these things (or anything), then there are consequences and implications that you must recognize and express in whatever you do.

But it ain't happening. We have been coasting, living off of and devouring the (vanishing) remnants of our pre-existing advantage, and it's easy and comfortable this way -- so why should people wake up and deal with it now -- because maybe ruin will come after their time.

It's a job, no worse (probably) than many others. One must survive.
