Astrologers will be scrambling...
Edited on Wed Sep-07-05 12:41 AM by Archae
I'd love to see the astrology nuts explain THIS away.

Today's Horoscope: Now Unsure
By STEPHANIE ROSENBLOOM
New York Times

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/28/fashion/sundaystyles/28ASTRO.html

"IN the not-too-distant future, maps of the solar
system may be redrawn to add another planet - or
perhaps take one away. Last month, when
scientists announced the discovery of a possible
10th planet, some nine billion miles from the
Sun, they reignited a long-running debate about
what a true planet is. They are grappling with
whether the newly found celestial body, known for
now as 2003 UB313, should be granted planetary
status, and if it is not, whether Pluto, a
like-size ice ball in a far orbit of the Sun, should be stripped of the title."

1. In astrology added planets have been associated with events at the time
of their discovery.

The planet Brown (named after it's discoverer)would have a very long year, and so would be associated with very long term multi-generational events.

Throw Pluto in.

Throw Pluto out.

Some astrologers keep track of asteroids, so those who want to track Pluto will track it, no matter what it's called.

3. I thought they were calling it Planet Xena?
It probably won't keep that name, but it's the moniker slapped on it by its discoverer.

Personally, I hope they stick with the Roman and Greek gods. Pontus, the god of the deep sea would work (view space as a vast sea, and you'll see it). Or we could use it as an opportunity to fix the sexism inherent in the god names and name it after a goddess. Libitina, the Roman goddess of the underworld and the bride of Pluto, would be a very good choice. Terminus, the Roman god of boundaries, would also be acceptable. If nobody can agree on a name, they may want to take a look at Eris, the Greek goddess of Discord. Of course, the astronomers themselves, after spending countless years searching for this thing, may want to name it Nike, the Greek goddess of Victory.

Whatever they name it, I do hope they consider it a planet. It's bigger than Pluto, and should certainly qualify as a planet.

4. Discoverer gets to name the planet. If they say Xena, so it is.
I'm fine with naming it after The Warrior Princess.

That would be cool!

5. Nuts? I don't make fun of your hobbies.
It's about coincidence and the interconnectivity of all things.

I respect reality based thinking, and the scientific method.

We expand our understanding of reality through the scientific method.

There are patterns to be found in randomness.

I enjoy looking at those patterns, looking at the observations of others, and making observations of my own.

If nothing else Astrology is a part of our cultural symbology, and as cultural symbology I enjoy understanding it.

It adds to my artistic pallet.

I am Leo!

Hear me Roar!
