Do you remember when you were a newbie?

Seriously. In two days, I will have been at DU for a full year! Wow. It really seems like yesterday. asthmaticeog was the first person I posted to in the lounge, but ChavezSpeaksTheTruth was the first long time person to really take notice of me. I couldn't believe when he responded to one of my posts and then, we started chasing each other around the lounge with a stupid picture of Lionel Richie. But, I was still very shy and intimidated. Everytime I would post a thread, I would be so afraid that no one would respond. :scared:

Then, all hell broke loose when matcom copycatted a thread of mine about my ass. GOPisEvil was mentioned in that thread and, as a result, we became good friends.

Over time, I learned some of the inside jokes and I learned who knew who IRL. I remember when I first realized that the lounge wasn't just a chaotic place, but was a place where people really got to know one another and where people fought and made up and learned to live and love for another day.

What a long, strange trip it's been. I love the lounge and I love all of you! :loveya:

What are your early memories of DU and of the lounge?

I was ready to quit posting (bad experience in GD) but latched onto the Lounge instead.

I was used to fighting w/ trolls on other boards, not my own people!

I registered in March 2003. I posted a couple hundred posts, and then DU had a server crash. When they restored service, users that had registered recently were deleted. So, I registered again, I think in May 2003.

Aside from that, I don't recall much, except that we had a lot of fun, not all of which was rated PG. :D

I started working in late 2003 pretty much took all the adventure away from me.....

So, I honestly can;t remember who first took notice...

It wasn't until I came to the Lounge that I got to know people.....

The first person to really notice and talk to me was ZombyWoof when I posted about working for Mo Udall. I'm still pretty much ignored, but I rely on DU for my news and my sanity.

I think things are much more random there. In the lounge, people actually do develop strong relationships. I dunno. It's just my opinion.

I was actually just looking at my recent post history, with a high percentage of nonsense (especially in here), an equally high percentage of outraged griping (in GD), and a smattering of smartass comments across all categories. Seems to the way I'm going...ME, not You. A self-deprecation, and genuine admiration for anyone who has posted so much. :hi:

Unfortunately that happens in GD alot too.

And I was quite intimidated at first. The Lounge moved very fast, and everyone already seemed to know each other; it was a little like arriving quite late to a cocktail party.

I do not recall the early days very well...I registered in Feb 2005...

And at first, I was only in GD and I think GDPolitics...The Lounge did NOT make the cut for me...

Until one day, I came in...and liked what I saw...

Even though I felt as though I had NO friends here yet...and I saw a lot of people who knew each other, with all the associations and flirtations and relationships...I felt very left out for awhile...

But not for long...and gradually I made some friends, and then things started to open up for me...

And NOW, I won't go anywhere else..ALL my friends are here...

I LOVE YOU ALL....this crazy town is my home....:loveya:

Late Winter 2003, in the run-up to the Iraq War.

My first lounge thread was "Who are your least favorite bass players?" Even then I was claiming my title of resident music dork.

I still don't start a lot of threads but back then I only responded to posts here and there. No long intense conversations with anyone in particular really here in the lounge or GD. Not that much has changed with me I guess.

I was fuming, raging. I was in miami and liable to go after some of these right wing Cubans down here. I joined DU instead, spending almost a month on the 2004 election forum, thinking we were actually going to expose the fraud before I realized it was hopeless.

So I was drunk one night and wandered into the lounge and laughed out loud when I saw somone picking on some guy named John Kleeb. So being the tormenter that I am, I started messing with Kleeb as well. And before you know it, the whole lounge got infected with kleeb fever.

It was the best therapy for my anger over the election. My rage eventually subsided, but it came back in full force after the Katrina crime. And now I'm out for blood again.

Ok, I'm not being a prick. Really. But that's exactly what I first thought.

But I kept lurking...and began to see some very nice people here. I recall replying to something that arwalden posted (thinking that he seemed funny, and smart. Plus, he was one of the gays, which I found further reassuring)

And I posted. And he replied back. And...I got to know more and more nice people...like, for instance, Jimmy Jazz. :-)

And the Lounge became a second home to me.

I knew that there were some long time posters here and that was very intimidating. I just left them alone for the most part because they scared me, but eventually, they started posting to me and I started posting back.

For the most part, people here are very nice and very welcoming - well, except for when you come here looking for a fight, but that's another matter.

People who seem to know each other, to share the same in jokes that you don't understand... it can be very off-putting.

But of all the forums this is the most welcoming.

I was kinda afraid, in the beginning, to post anything in response to the "popular people". But every single one of them made me feel welcome once I did so.

It's a great bunch of people. And it has become a second home.

It's been over 4 years for me, and i don't really remember details, except reading and posting and realizing i wouldn't be going anywhere.

I heard Skinner on the Washington Journal one Saturday morning (he was on the phone being interviewed by, i think, Pete Slen). That was in early to mid-February of 2001. I logged in and been here since.

I think dwickham was the first to make me feel welcome. And undergroundpanther was the first to really talk to me in depth. Sundog was the one who finally welcomed me into the fold.

It can be tough being a newbie - wanting to connect, wanting to get involved, but nobody knows you...

My first post was something 2004 Primaries-related in GD, way back in August 2003. Somebody had posted yet another "Dennis Kucinich is unelectable" thread, so naturally I responded. I forgot who it was, but somebody complimented my post and I decided to stick around.

I don't remember when I found the lounge. I posted for quite awhile but everybody ignored me. But when I started going through a river of shit last spring, everybody here was very supportive.

And for that I'm forever grateful :7
