Love Song Suggestions for our Wedding...
Edited on Wed Sep-07-05 09:22 PM by YellowRubberDuckie
I need some good suggestions. Skip and I don't have a song, and I'd like to walk down the aisle to something contemporary, not here comes the bride, which as I understand was written for prostitutes in the late 19th century or something. Anyway, whether it's Frank Sinatra or Nora Jones, I'd like suggestions of love songs that twitterpate you. Thanks...

2. Mrs. McLargehuge and I had this as our wedding song -
Heaven 90210 by Urge Overkill

You see them coming, the queen of hearts and the king of fools,
Me and Innocence, just playing cards by the swimming pool.
They pull me out of an empty place, left me all alone I wanna touch you.
Think I'm movin' on back to Kansas
And I thought that savin' you would save me.

When she comes to me and takes my hand
When pain is all I know
She gives me heavenly thrills, 90210.

Lookin' at you as the sun was risin',
Nothin' to do just-a-watch at the man upon the moon
Look into his eyes and the sad blue glow, and it ain't surprisin', no,
To see a blind man lookin' twice before he crosses the road, yeah
Califor-ni-a, don't slip and slide into the sea on me
The sun still shines in L.A. when you're gone.

When she comes to me and takes my hand
When pain is all I know
And gives me heavenly thrills, 90210
Just gives me heavenly thrills, 90210
She gives me heavenly thrills.

4. A friend had this song as their first dance
(and I love the song-so pretty)

Lover Lay Down

Spring sweet rhythm dance in my head
Slip into my lover's hands
Kiss me won't you kiss me now
And sleep I would inside your mouth
Don't be us too shy
For knowing it's no big surprise that
I will wait for you
I will wait for no one but you

Oh please lover lay down
Spend this time with me
Together share this smile
Lover lay down
Spend this time with me
Walk with me, walk with you
Hold my hand your hands
So much we have dreamed
And you were so much younger
Hard to explain that we are stronger
A million reasons life to deny
Let's toss them away
See you and me we
Lay down look see
She and he
By my lover's side
Together share this smile
Each other's tears to cry
Together share this smile
Lover lay down
Oh please oh please
Oh please lover lay down
Oh please lover lay down
And you weep
Lover lay down
Cause it's over
Lover lay down

Say love, say love, say love, say love, say love
Should I love you
Could you love me
Darling it's all the same
'Til we dance away
Chasing me all around
Leading me all around
Leading me all around in circles
Say...

5. I LOVE this Michael McDonald song ("Our Love")
Edited on Wed Sep-07-05 09:23 PM by DeposeTheBoyKing
Lost and lonely lives
Floating like waves at sea
We make it day by day
Watching the world go by

In a moment where time stands still
From here we look out on forever

Chorus:
Darling, our love
One love that never fades away
Our love
This love will light the world on its way

Shattered, broken dreams
Sifting like grains of sand
We claim it and here we stay
Watching the world go by

With the strength that we spend in this life
In the hope that it goes on forever
We believe as we promise to try, that

Chorus:

In a moment when time stands still
From here we look out on forever
And we can see all that time will tell

Chorus:

13. It was a great first dance song.
Creepy as hell when it came on at an inopportune moment in J's place after we'd been dating maybe a month. (I later found out it was from a mix CD handed out as a party favor at his friend's wedding. Which diminished the creep factor tremendously. But still.)

But a great first dance song.

9. Edwin McCain - Could Not Ask For More
Lying here with you
Listening to the rain
Smiling just to see, the smile upon your face
And these are the moments I thank God that I'm alive
And these are the moments
I'll remember all my life
I found all I've waited for
And I could not ask for more

Looking in your eyes
Seeing all I need
Everything you are, is everything to me

And these are the moments
I know heaven must exist
And these are the moments, I know all I need is this
I have all I've waited for (yeah)
And I could not ask for more…

I could not ask for more than this time together
I could not ask for more than this time with you
And every prayer has been answered
And every dream I’ve hads come true
yeah, right here in this moment, is right where I'm meant to be
Oh, here with you here with me…
Ooh, yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah

And these are the moments I thank God that I'm alive
and these are the moments I'll remember all my life
I've got all I've waited for yeah
And I could not ask for more

I could not ask for more than this time together
I could not ask for more than this time with you
And every prayer has been answered
And every dream I’ve hads come true
yeah, and right here in this moment is right where I'm meant to be
here with you here with me…

I could not ask for more than the love you give me
'Cuz it's all I've waited for
And I could not ask for more (more)
ooh and I could not ask for more

as well for your 'first dance'?

If I ever am in a situation to have a 'first dance' - I am definitely going with Smokey Robinson's little-know but beautiful

"I Love Your Face".

Makes me melt everytime I hear it.

19. Can it be just a melody?
In all seriousness.....The long and melodic introduction to The Damned's "Smash It Up'...(this is called "Smash It Up, part 1) is beautifully orchestrated and rises regally to a crescendo.

The recording is only 2 minutes long but could be technically expanded or expanded in live performance.

If you have never head this piece you might want to check it out...

21. The Nearness of You
It's not the pale moon that excites me
That thrills and delights me, oh no
It's just the nearness of you

It isn't your sweet conversation
That brings this sensation, oh no
It's just the nearness of you

When you're in my arms and I feel you so close to me
All my wildest dreams come true

I need no soft lights to enchant me
If you'll only grant me the right
To hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night the nearness of you

Or....My Romance:

My romance doesn't need to have a moon in the sky
My romance doesn't need a blue lagoon standing by
No month of May
No shining star
No hideaway
No soft guitar

My romance doesn't need a castle rising in Spain
Nor a dance to a constantly surprising refrain
Wide awake I can make my most fantastic dreams come true
'Cause my romance doesn't need a thing but you

26. Well, Whatever You Do. . .
. . .don't use at any point in the wedding or reception the Green Day song, Time of Your Life. THAT IS NOT A LOVE SONG!

Now, as to the actual question: Look into the old standard "I've Got A Crush On You." Beautiful song with wonderful chords and gentle, but not overly deep lyrics. My wife and i practically get weepy on that one. And that can be tough because when we hear it, i'm proabably the one playing it on the piano.

28. Garbage - #1 Crush
I would die for you
I would die for you
I've been dying just to feel you by my side
To know that you're mine

I will cry for you
I will cry for you
I will wash away your pain with all my tears
And drown your fear

I will pray for you
I will pray for you
I will sell my soul for something pure and true
Someone like you

See your face every place that I walk in
Hear your voice every time I am talking
You will believe in me
And I will never be ignored

I will burn for you
Feel pain for you
I will twist the knife and bleed my aching heart
I'll tear it apart

I will lie for you
I can steal for you
I will crawl on hands and knees until you see
You're just like me

Violate all my love that I'm missing
Throw away all the pain that I'm living
You will believe in me
And I can never be ignored

I would die for you
I would kill for you
I will steal for you
I'd do time for you
I would wait for you
I'd make room for you
I'd sail ships for you
To be close to you
To be a part of you
'Cause I believe in you
I believe in you
I would die for you.

Now is there anything more romantic than that?

Khash.

34. It'd be an unusual ceremony true....
But it's passionate, intense and a little obsessive. And shouldn't a newly married couple feel a little obsessed with each other? (Or even an old married couple, for that matter?)

Why do what everone else has done and does do?

When I got married my wife wore a scarlet cocktail dress... she said it was more accurate. I told her if she really wanted accuracy it should have a bustle with a bull's eye on it. Which got me a good slap and pleasantly delayed the entire ceremony....

Khash.

32. Not that I'm a fan of Wagner's Bridal Chorus (Here Comes the Bride), BUT
prostitutes really have nothing to do with this piece. In the opera, the chorus is sung after the wedding ceremony by the women of the bridal party, as they accompany the heroine Elsa to the bridal chamber. However, what all these women are going to do in the bridal chamber, I shall not speculate.

As far as what you'd like going down the aisle, I'd recommend that you talk with your fiance, and think of some tunes that are meaningful to YOU...not somebody else.

If you want some suggestions of non-traditional classical tunes that work very well, I'd be glad to offer advice...A substantial portion of my income is from playing violin for people's weddings. :nopity:

Congrats on your engagement! :D

35. Grateful Dead - Two Souls in Communion
What are they seeing, when they look in each other's eyes?
What are they feeling, when they see each other's smile?
Is it a love I've never known - or an emotion that I've outgrown?

Did I take a wrong turning on life's winding road?
Won't somebody help me find the right way to go?
My life need some correction, alteration in direction
Won't somebody comfort me for a while - yes, I'm lost

What is the secret of this tie that binds?
Two souls in communion, both body and mind
Is it special magic, or just the nature of things?
Conceived of great spirit, not for beggars but kings

You who have found it, please help me along
I'm a man, I'm a man, - I'm not made out of stone
My needs they are simple, I don't want many things,
But I truly want to fly on those wings of love one more time.

That's all I need (fly up, fly home)
I want to fly on them wings (fly up, fly home)
I want to fly on them wings of love (fly up, fly home)
I'm a stranger here (fly up, fly home)
Won't somebody help me now (fly up, fly home)
I wake up early in the morning (fly up, fly home)
you know I never saw you babe (fly up, fly home)
I just can't seem to understand
Can't seem to understand what's wrong (fly up, fly home)
What I wanna do is take a little ride with you, on the wings of love
Woh-oh one more time, one more time.

Very slow and wonderful song. Was gonna use it at my wedding but couldn't get a copy of it (this was before Napster)

Interlude

Time is like a dream
and now for a time you are mine
let's hold fast to the dream
that tastes and sparkles like wine

who knows if it's real
or just something we're both dreaming of
what feels like an interlude now
could be the beginning of love

loving you is a world that's strange
so much more than my heart can hold
loving you makes the whole world change
loving you I could not grow old
no, nobody knows when love will end
so til then sweet friend

time is like a dream
and now for a time you are mine
let's hold fast to the dream
that tastes and sparkles like wine

Edited on Thu Sep-08-05 07:54 PM by Splatter Phoenix
Not big on romance songs in my Winamp-y library, but here's a really good one, kind of alternative-rock/celtic, maybe? :D

VAST - Touched

"Touched
You say that I am too
So much
Oh, what you say is true

I'll never
Find someone quite like you
Again
I'll never
Find someone quite like you
Like you

The razors and the dying roses plead
I don't leave you alone
The demigods and every ghost of God
God knows I'm not alone

I'll never find someone quite like you again
I'll never
Find someone quite like you
Again

I,
I looked into your eyes and saw
A world that does not exist
I looked into your eyes and saw
A world I wish I was in

I'll never find someone quite as touched as you
I'll never love someone quite the way
That I
Love you

46. Some John Martyn...his song "Couldn't Love You More"
Edited on Thu Sep-08-05 08:08 PM by mtnester
is what hubby and I did our first dance to. His stuff is fantastic, from wonderful to downright skanky.

His music is hard to come by, and not discounted at all when you do find it, even online.

We danced to a recorded bootleg that we think we may be the only ones to have (on edit - cause we recorded it ourselves). His album Glorious Fool was named as a slap at Ron Reagan.

Fantastic stuff. You should buy it just to hear it. You can read up on him some here:

48. From this moment by Shania Twain? Not my kind o' music, but...
it has wedding written all over it.

(Talky part, but I think there's another version that doesn't have this:I do swear that I'll aways be there.
I'd give anything and everything and I will always care.
Through weakness and strength, happiness and sorrow,
for better or worse, I will love you with
every beat of my heart.)

From this moment life has begun
From this moment you are the one
Right beside you is where I belong
From this moment on

From this moment I have been blessed
I live only for your happiness
And for your love I'd give my last breath
From this moment on

I give my hand to you with all my heart
Can't wait to live my life with you, can't wait to start
You and I will never be apart
My dreams came true because of you

From this moment as long as I live
I will love you, I promise you this
There is nothing I wouldn't give
From this moment on

You're the reason I believe in love
And you're the answer to my prayers from up above
All we need is just the two of us
My dreams came true because of you

From this moment as long as I live
I will love you, I promise you this
From this moment
I will love you as long as I live
From this moment on

50. I like KC and Jojo's "All My Life"
Here's a song NOT to do -

I just got married last June and we had the song from the "Mask of Zorro" soundtrack "I want to spend my lifetime loving you" (sung by Marc Antony and Tina Arena). Unfortunately, I forgot to take into account that in the opening of the song you hear Zorro galloping and then a whip cracking. When the DJ played this for our first dance, *gallop, gallop, gallop, gallop, WHIP!* reverberated loudly through the tiny reception hall.

The Beatles

"There are places I remember
All my life
Though some have changed
Some forever, not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends
i still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life
I've loved them all
But of all these friends and lovers
there is no one
compares with you
and these memories lose their meaning
when i think of love
as something new..." Come on-It's the BEATLES!

59. My son just got married
He and his bride's first dance was to Neil Young's "Razor Love." They walked down the aisle to Canon in D. It's fairly traditional but it was played live by his dad's brass quintet which was pretty cool. Fanfare for Le Pere by Dukas is awesome and was used as the pre-processional music.

Second runner up for first dance was Sade's "By Your Side" and Jack Johnson's "No Other Way."

"THe Way You Look Tonight" by Michael Buble is a terrific update of an old classic.

Have fun. Pick something that has mean to you.

Edited on Thu Sep-08-05 10:05 PM by RetroLounge
She hates my mama
She hates my daddy too
She loves to tell me
She hates the things I do
She loves to lie beside me
Almost every night
She's no lady she's my wife

The preacher asked her
And she said I do
The preacher asked me
And she said yes he does too
And the preacher said
I pronounce you 99 to life
Son she's no lady she's your wife

And I can't remember
How I met her
Seems like she's always just been hanging here off my right arm
And I can't remember
How I ever
Thought that I just couldn't live without a woman's charm

And even though
She loves the smell of French perfume
And even though
She walks around in high-heel shoes
All I know
Is I'm the one who pays her price
Man she's no lady she's my wife

And I can't remember
How I met her
Seems like she's always just been hanging here off my right arm
And I can't remember
How I ever
Thought that I just couldn't live without a woman's charm

Yea she hates my mama
She hates my daddy too
She loves to tell me
She hates the things I do
She loves to lie beside me
Almost every night
She's no lady she's my wife

*****************************

During the ceremony, we had a jazz pianist and stand-up bass with a female vocalist. They did "So In Love" by kd lang in the ceremony, and we walked out to "Lets Get Lost" by Chet Baker.

67. "Can I Have This Dance"
I'll always remember the song they were playing,
The first time we danced and I knew.
As we swayed to the music and held to each other,
I fell in love with you.
Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?
Would you be my partner, then every night?
When we're together it feels so right,
Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?

I'll always remember that magic moment,
When I held you close to me.
As we moved together, I knew, forever,
You're all I'll ever need.

Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?
Would you be my partner every night?
When we're together it feels so right,
Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?

Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?
Would you be my partner every night?
When we're together it feels so right,
Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?

69. What Are You Doing the Rest Of Your Life?
I want to see your face in every kind of light
In fields of dawn and forests of the night
And when you stand before the candles on a cake
Oh, let me be the one to hear the silent wish you make

What are you doing the rest of your life?
North and South and East and West of your life
I have only one request of your life
That you spend it all with me

All the seasons and the times of your days
All the nickels and the dimes of your days
Let the reasons and the rhymes of your days
All begin and end with me

I want to see your face in every kind of light
In the fields of dawn and the forests of the night
And when you stand before the candles on a cake
Oh, let me be the one to hear the silent wish you make

Those tomorrows waiting deep in your eyes
In the world of love that you keep in your eyes
I'll awaken what's asleep in your eyes
It may take a kiss or two

Through all of my life
Summer, Winter, Spring, and Fall of my life
All I ever will recall of my life
Is all of my life with you

But not the original Postal Service one, but the Iron and Wine cover. It's such a romantic song, especially if you've had a relationship where you've had to spend time apart because of travel or something. My husband served aboard a submarine for the first 3 years we were married and that song always reminds me of early days and makes my eyes all misty.

75. "Nowhere With Love" by Harry Connick Jr
In a way, I really don't know much at all
And if you say that I'm simple, you're on the ball
On the ball to say that I'm going nowhere
But I'm going nowhere with love

They all say that i'm not impressive at best
That's o.k., I've got nobody to impress
My impression is they'd rather be elsewhere
Oh, I'm staying nowhere with love

Well, it's better to be happy in a cardboard shack
Than to be alone in a castle
All you get for your money is a heart attack
I'd just as soon alleviate the hassle

Every day, I watch the go-getters go by
Even they say the ladder is much too high
Why should I go high, I'm happy below there
Right here in nowhere with love

76. Butterfly Kissses
That song was my cousin's song for her wedding. I remember when she asked me to download it for her so her mom could hear it, I pulled a funny trick on her. I downloaded the song "Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses" by Atreyu, which is kinda like a screamy-emo-hardcore song that was definetly not what she thought it was. I laughed, apologized, then downloaded the "normal" version of the song. It really is a rather corny song, maybe don't go with that one, but I thought I'd share the story anyway, I at least thought it was funny.

78. If people are aware of your DU name-there is only one song
for your new hubby to dedicate to you:

Rubber Ducky, you're the one,
You make bathtime lots of fun,
Rubber Ducky, I'm awfully fond of you;

Woo woo be doo

Rubber Ducky, joy of joys,
When I squeeze you, you make noise!
Rubber Ducky, you're my very best friend, it's true!

Doo doo doo doo, doo doo

Every day when I
Make my way to the tubby
I find a little fella who's
Cute and yellow and chubby

Rub-a-dub-a-dubby!

Rubber Ducky, you're so fine
And I'm lucky that you're mine
Rubber ducky, I'm awfully fond of you.

Every day when I
Make my way to the tubby
I find a little fella who's
Cute and yellow and chubby

Rubber Ducky, you're so fine
And I'm lucky that you're mine
Rubber ducky, I'm awfully fond of -
Rubber ducky, I'd like a whole pond of -
Rubber ducky I'm awfully fond of you!

Doo doo, be doo

Of course the gender references will have to be changed

79. Dark Night of the Soul
it's by Loreena McKennitt (Mask & the Mirror cd).

Don't let the title throw you. It's a beautiful love song. A number of people I know have used it in the ceremonial parts of their weddings. If my love and I ever decide to renew our vows... this is the song I intend to use.

The Dark Night of the Soul - Loreena McKennitt

Upon a darkened night
the flame of love was burning in my breast
And by a lantern bright
I fled my house while all in quiet rest
Shrouded by the night
and by the secret stair I quickly fled
The veil concealed my eyes
while all within lay quiet as the dead

Chorus
Oh night thou was my guide
oh night more loving than the rising sun
Oh night that joined the lover
to the beloved one
transforming each of them into the other

Upon that misty night
in secrecy, beyond such mortal sight
Without a guide or light
than that which burned so deeply in my heart
That fire t'was led me on
and shone more bright than of the midday sun
To where he waited still
it was a place where no one else could come

Chorus

Within my pounding heart
which kept itself entirely for him
He fell into his sleep
beneath the cedars all my love I gave
And by the fortress walls
the wind would brush his hair against his brow
And with its smoothest hand
caressed my every sense it would allow

Chorus

I lost myself to him
and laid my face upon my lovers breast
And care and grief grew dim
as in the mornings mist became the light
There they dimmed amongst the lilies fair
There they dimmed amongst the lilies fair
There they dimmed amongst the lilies fair

(All rights belong to the artist... blah, blah)

All I Ask of You - from Phantom of the Opera

Good song... that EVERYONE (not shouting just emphasis) seems to use which is why I personally wouldn't use it. However it is very appropriate and lovely.

There is also Mark Knopfler's (sp?) song from The Princess Bride.

I liked the suggestion of "The Way You Look Tonight/Can't Take That Away From Me". I never would have considered using it for walking down the aisle before... I've always considered it as something for later at the reception because it's a song and dance number but... damn, I like that idea.

I'm afraid that my taste in rock music basically froze in 1972 so I'm really not up on current popular music (except for the various pop pieces I hear at the dance school).

A Halloween wedding? If you just want incidental music... how about something by Enigma or one of the other goth/techno/ethereal music groups.

On the classical side of things... if you have a sense of humour you could use something by Philip Glass... you could make the walk down the aisle last forever or at least seem like it.

Aaron Copland's version of Simple Gifts (the Shaker tune) - I'm thinking of the orchestral version but any of the vocal versions would work as well.

So there's my $.02(Cdn) worth of suggestions.

81. Love Moves In Mysterious Ways
by Julia Fordham

Who'd have thought
This is how the pieces fit?
You and I
Shouldn't even try making sense of it

I forgot
How we ever came this far
I believe we had reasons
but I don't know what they are
So blame it on my heart, oh

Love moves in mysterious ways
It's always so surprising
When love appears over the horizon
I'll love you for the rest of my days
But still, it's a mystery
How you ever came to me
Which only proves
Love moves in mysterious ways

Heaven knows
Love is just a chance we take
We make plans
But then love demands a leap of faith

So hold me close
And never let me go
'Cause even though we think we know
which way the river flows
That's not the way love goes, no

Love moves in mysterious ways
It's always so surprising
When love appears over the horizon
I'll love you for the rest of my days
But still, it's a mystery
How you ever came to me
Which only proves
Love moves in mysterious ways

Like the ticking of the clock
two hearts beat as one
But I'll never understand
the ways it's done

Love moves in mysterious ways
It's always so surprising
When love appears over the horizon
I'll love you for the rest of my days
But still, it's a mystery
How you ever came to me
Which only proves
Love moves in mysterious ways
Love moves in mysterious ways

85. this twilight garden
the cure

I lift my lips from kissing you
to kiss the sky
cloud soft and blue
and slow the sun melts down
into your golden words for me

I lift my hands from touching you
to touch the wind that whispers through
this twilight garden
turns into a world
where dreams are real

no one will ever take your place
I am lost in you
no one will ever take your place
so in love with you

I lift my eyes from watching you
to watch the star rise shine onto
your dreaming face and dreaming smile
you're dreaming worlds
for me

I lift my lips from kissing you
and kiss the sky wide deepest blue
and slow the moon swims up
into your golden words
for me

no one will ever take your place
I am lost in you
no one will ever take your place
so in love with you

(this song makes me melt every time...)
