In it's own day, and until the 8th Century or so, the arena was known as the Flavian Amphitheater. This was in honor of Flavius Vespasianus and his son Titus Flavius, who built the sports complex. After that, it became known as the Colosseum (note the spelling) because of a colossal statue of Nero that had once stood nearby. The statue was a remnant of Nero's Golden House, and had once stood in the entryway. After Nero's death and condemnation by the Senate, it was modified into a statue of Helios, the Greek god of the sun. The statue has long since disappeared, but the amphitheater remains. A special quadrangle marks the spot where the statue once stood. It's a popular tourist side-destination for people visiting the Colosseum.
