I have a thousand tea lights.

I need them, and I pick up an extra bag every time I'm at the store. I need them and I want them. They save heat, they're cheap, and they add some energy to our surrroundings, Who's with me?

My husband hates candles....so I'm out....

Here's my deal- the power went out here last winter and I found that 30 or so tealights placed strategically around a room could heat it it 70 degrees througout the entire night.

They were great! You can pick up a bag of fifty at any drugstore for 2 dollars. :)

However, have you ever noticed that SOME tea lights burn quicker than others?
The ones I pick up at Garden Ridge seem to be ok; but if I get them cheaper they suck. Weird. Different burn times. It's that Yankee Candle-quality vs. Drugstore stuff delimma.

I need them for warmth and for light.

because I notice a SIGNIFICANT difference in the burn times from package to package. In this case sometimes quality is better than quantity because it takes 2 to 1.

The ones I bought (by fifty) in bagfulls have a span of three hours each. It's 2 dollars per bag, so every time I go into the drugstore I get more and store them in a large area in my closet. I also bought flint at my local Bass Pro shop so there's no question about being able to light them. :)

and place them around the room in small groups on many surfaces, I can expect 70 degrees for 3 hours, 60 degrees or so after 8 hours. This is in a fairly energy-efficient apartment, and very effective in the dead of winter.

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- A hurricane watch was posted Saturday for the Southeast coast as Ophelia strengthened into a hurricane once again, and meteorologists said its meandering course could take a sharp turn toward land.



A hurricane watch was posted along a 300-mile stretch from the Georgia-South Carolina line to North Carolina's Cape Lookout, meaning hurricane-force wind of at least 74 mph was possible by Sunday evening, the National Hurricane Center said.

North Carolina's governor declared a state of emergency as the storm's track shifted northward with a forecast landfall Tuesday on the North Carolina coast.

The storm wasn't close enough to North Carolina that a decision had to be made on whether to order evacuations, said Eddie King, Pender County emergency management director.

South Carolina officials said a decision would be made soon about whether to order evacuations, but Charleston County announced it would open shelters Saturday evening for voluntary evacuees from low-lying areas and barrier islands.

The storm is "moving really slow so we have to hang with it. But there is some expectation it will move toward the coast," said Joe Farmer, a spokesman for the South Carolina Emergency Management Division.

The crew of an Air Force hurricane hunter airplane flying through Ophelia measured top sustained wind of 80 mph. It could strengthen a bit before an expected Tuesday landfall, said Eric Blake, a meteorologist at the hurricane center in Miami.

"Almost every (computer) model indicates a United States landfall," he said. "It's time to make those preparations."

At 11 p.m. EDT Saturday, Ophelia was 255 miles east-southeast of Charleston, S.C., and about 235 miles south of Cape Hatteras, N.C. The storm was nearly stationary, but forecasters predicted it would head to the northwest, toward the coast, late Sunday or Monday.

Several shelters that opened Saturday already had been closed, and two that remained open didn't have any residents, said Red Cross Carolina Lowcountry Chapter executive director Jim Ledbetter.

Ophelia already was contributing to rough surf along the coast.

"There are large swells from Ophelia and residual swells from (Tropical Storm) Nate and from the northeast winds we've had over the past few days. You can imagine how confused the seas are," said meteorologist Steve Pfaff at the National Weather Service in Wilmington, N.C. He said a buoy at Frying Pan Shoals, 35 miles off Cape Fear, was reporting 12-foot waves.

Nate and another tropical storm, Maria, posed no threat to land as they weakened over the cooler water of the north Atlantic.

If Ophelia makes landfall in South Carolina it would the third hurricane in 13 months to strike the state. Hurricanes Charley and Gaston hit the South Carolina coast last season in the same general area.

Ophelia is the seventh hurricane in this year's busy Atlantic hurricane season, which began June 1 and ends Nov. 30. Peak storm activity typically occurs from the end of August through mid-September.

Now incense sticks, I have about 600. I'd just ordered a bag of 500 when my best friend gave me a sampler pack of around 50. In addition I had more lying around from previous purchases.

to stock up on anything that's going to get you through a cold, hard, long & possibly expensive winter. These candles are so cheap! Having them in my closet for later makes me feel a lot safer. I foisted several bags of them off on my dad, who'd said, "But I have enough candles!" What can I say? I was a girl scout. We want to be prepared.

candles. I left with one bag of 50 tealights & 2 pillar candles. Winter's coming. I like the cozy light.

Beaches constitute a suspension of the usual laws of propietous behaviour - that said, I haven't been on one for 4 years.

I used to go onto them fairly frequently at university (one of the local beaches was the location for the opening shots from "Chariots of Fire" where they run through the surf), but nearly always kept my shoes on (this being Scotland).

I had to quit buying those damn cute little tealight candle holders - I was acquiring too many of them! :D

That is so cool. I love it that they are their own holders as well, because the wax will melt & liquefy and not go anywhere. You can set up a hundred or so in a power outage and the next day throw the empty tin holders away.

I'm going candle crazy. Tealights are some of my faves.

Up until now, I've been buying the bags of them at Bed, Bath, & Beyond. Is there a better place to get them? (and - even better - are they vanilla?)

I go to a CVS pharmacy that's walking distance from my apartment (I lucked out on location) and they have bags and bags of tea lights. Some are vanilla, and some are this sort of overpowering cinnamon. I get both, anyway, just in case. 2 bucks!

with a little hole in them, can that be thought of as a similar malady :shrug: because others say things like, "well, she's just so cloistered in her own little ivory tower" or what the hell ever; but hubby has had to glue them together so that now i am very near to being cloistered within a ceramic tower of nag champa incense holders so i do understand in a sense :D

I started this thread (a bit buzzed) because I want all my fellow DUers to be prepared just in case of emergencies, and I find that tea lights are EXCELLENT heating if your power goes out or when gas prices skyrocket this winter. A thousand tea lights will be good heating for about 2 weeks.

I keep a bunch of used tires around my place, and burn those when it gets a little chilly. Of course, this being MN, I have to burn quite a few at a time to get any real warmth off them.

And even though I don't have a fireplace, I just bust out a window and let all that thick oily smoke pour out. It does a good job of keeping the bugs away, too.
