4. What's wrong with Roger Penske?
I am unaware of anything that would make him any more of an asshole than your average IRL/CART/F1 team owner.

5. Because Penske would blow a goat if it got him another win at
Indianapolis. Witness the 1994 pushrod engine from Ilmore (badged "mercedes"). And the defection to the IRLosers too.

Now, on the scale of hate, he's nowhere close to Tony George, mind you.

6. Indy 1994 - I was kind of suffering from auto racing PTSD at the time
No memories. What was it, some sly sidestep of rules?

7. Understood.
May 1994 sucked.

Let's see. Indy had a rule that if you had a production-based pushrod engine it could be bigger(i think) and have more boost pressure(i'm certain) than the 2.65L turbo Cosworth's, Hondas, etc.

This was to encourage the local goober in his garage with a trailer to think about entering the race.

People had been entering these for years, but they always failed.

In 1993 Penske and Ilmor put together a serious effort for 1994, got the 'unfair advantage', and blew the field away.

Of course Karma came to them in 1995 and they didn't qualify a car for the '500.

8. Ah. Got the rest of the story in Wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pushrod_engine

Classic loophole exploitation. Usually has the nice side-effect that the loophole is closed shortly thereafter. Happens a lot in auto racing. Not really hate-inducing if you ask me.

Here's another interesting loophole exploit: the 1978 Brabham F1 "fan car". Like the 1994 Indy Penske, it lasted one race, which it won with Niki Lauda at the wheel, before the loophole was closed.

9. I was there. In person.
I knew it was gonna be a wild race when one of the skydivers who landed on the infield prior during the Anthem broke his leg when he hit the ground and had to be carried off in an ambulance.
