1. North Cascades
Is absolutely fantastic, gorgeous scenery, and almost no tourists compared to most national parks. Ywllowstone is of course increadible, as is Glacier.

If we add Canadian parks, Pacific Rim Park on Vancouver Island is one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

5. Yellowstone!
I've never been there, but my Dad works there as a 'Ranger Naturalist' every summer.

Look for a guy who looks just like me, only grayer and bearded. He's working at the geyser basin this year (I think).

6. Great Smokies (and Shenandoah)
Lush forests...plenty of lesser-known trails to get away from the crowds. Nothing like waking to birdsong in the backcountry. :-)

9. There is no way to pick just one.

They are all beautiful and have unique aspects.

If I had to pick my favorite experience in a National Park I would probably chose sitting on the top of Middle Teton looking out at the vast expanse of Idaho, or maybe I would chose sitting in a natural hot spring in Yellowstone surrounded with snow capped peaks, no, no, no, it's driving into Smoky Mountain National Park on a fall day with a crisp wind in the air....or maybe.....driving to the sun highway....or maybe.....stumbling on a herd of bighorn Sheep in Rocky Mt. National Park...or maybe.....me and my grandma hauling ass away from what we thought was a Grizzly in the distance while hiking in Glacier (or maybe not).

I love our National Parks. Teddy Roosevelt is one of our greatest Presidents for this achievement alone.

12. Yellowstone is the only one I've been to
that's on the list. I've also been to Grand Teton. Since they are adjacent, I guess they could count as one, but GT is less crowded than Yellowstone.
I've heard Isle Royal, MI is a great park and good for getting totally away from civilization. I like electricity and running water, personally.

15. Isle Royale is a spectacular place
I did a backpacking trip there back in 1989. Hiked the length of the island (45 miles or so) from west to east.

16. Mount Rainier
Absolutely gorgeous.. avoid the Paradise area if you don't like the schmaltzy "touristy" experience. On the Northwestern side, you can hike right up to the Carbon Glacier. Or, if you're a really adventurous type, you can hike the Wonderland Trail all the way around the mountain... a hearty 14 day journey.
