39. a similar problem
Not that I have a great deal of money but I've had this problem also. I haven't been able to find a middle-aged female birdwatcher to travel with who is actually free to travel or, if she has free time, she has no money.

Mexico
Morocco
Great Britain (England & Scotland)
France
Germany
Switzerland
Austria
Holland
Czech Republic (I LOVE PRAGUE)

Wow, it helps to make a list!

Morocco was fabulous. I love traveling, so I am especially cheesed off about the rest of the world hating our guts. Sigh. Maybe one day I'll make that dream trip to Egypt...

13. nepal....
As a caucasian with an american passport, i would not travel to nepal until there is no more maoist insurgency... i was there when that started in 1996.

I was threatened as a simple trekking backpacker... i trecked up to the annipurna base camp.... i LOVE THE HIGH HIMALAYAS... they kick ass... like white teeth scraping the sky... makes the hair stand up on the back of my head those massive peaks.

Near annipurna are several 7000 meter peaks, machupichare (sp) and the annipurna range... stunning beyond measure.

I was threatened by some nepali men in pokhara, where they clearly resented the white folks with money coming in to their country and living like kings while they underclass... it was not my fault, but there was a clear sense of anger beneath things in teh towns and the villiages. I felt a similar vibe of anger in kashmir when i was there in 1988...

If you want to experience the himalaya, i recommend the upper region of uttar pradhesh in india. Fly in to new delhi, take a taxi for 3000 rupees or so to rishikesh and then make your way up through the foothills (14000 foot foothills) to the peaks. India does not have the insurgency threat, and the place is equally stunning. Himichal pradesh can be more dodgey... ladakh is cool, but then your on the other side of the mountains, and its flat like being on the nevada side of the sierras... the water falls to the south of the himaalays making the peaks white... on the tibet side, they're 10000 feet above a 13000 foot plateau... really high, but it really does look like death valley visually.

It is why i live in the scottish highlands now as i write this. It is a more pure place in a western country, where if i snapped a photo in the right direction, it could be the himalayas... just without third world government... but my heart is in those high himalayan valleys... especially gomukh/tapoban up from gangotri, the origin of the ganges river.

80. As a tourist trekker
Trekked 16 days from Jiri to just past Tengboche, somewhat near Everest (35 km?) (in 2000).

Achilles tendon gave out (not total tear). Had to walk 3 days back to airport in Lukla. http://www.disarray.co.uk/holiday/nepal/slides/nepal07.html]

Beautiful Country, Beautiful People. Went through a village controlled by Maoists. No problem, but my guide transformed me from American to Canadian.

Situation is worse now, but no tourists have been harmed, it appears.

I'd go back if not for my Achilles, my knees, and cash.

Very cheap to trek there. Getting over there is the expensive part.
I'd advise doing it!

49. Just tehran in 1973
It might have been 74... what year did nixon resign... it was right after that.

It was a beautiful place and i remember ticking my mental box to come back and to travel out to the countryside which looked so sweet. .. little did i know what the future would entail.

If country borders and nationalism was not a problem, i would gladly travel in jordan, syria, afganistan, iran, iraq and pakistan. I love mountains and deserts... sadly it is too dangerous for a blue eyed american passport. Instead, i've gone back to india many times, as its political stability has afforded me some of that angst... but if afganistan was not dangerous, i'd go there in a hot second... same with iran.

I was thinking of arranging to visit cuba also, as an act of civil disobedience. I really liked taiwan, but the far east is too crowded for my taste, though i like oriental culture. My next new country will probably be romania. I realized in answering this question, that i am now older than the number of countries i've visited... and that simply cannot be allowed to stand.

Canada when I was 10, Luxemburg, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Iceland when I was 17. Took a two week trip for German class. Iceland was a two hour stopover on the way home.

I recommend overseas trips for teenagers. I'm sure my parents were terrified for the two weeks I was gone but it was a real eye-opener for an ornery teenager. I had never heard of the holocaust until I visited Dachau. Met two really nice Russians in the middle of the cold war. I figured that poor little Austrian inn was going to break out into a James Bond movie because two American girls were talking and receiving gifts from two Russian men who said in broken English that they just wanted to be friends with the Americans. I half expected to be carted off by the CIA and locked away in some prison just for smiling back. It was amazing how fast years of propaganda melted away and how foolish I felt when I realized Russians were people just like me who didn't want the cold war any more than I did.

Canada (many times), the Bahamas (age 13); England, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Austria, France, the Netherlands (age 17); Japan (at age 27 for a year with a whole bunch of return trips after that for as long as three months); Taiwan (age 35), and China (age 40).

I know it's time I went back to Europe. As one of my former teaching colleagues pointed out, my trip to Europe was closer chronologically to World War II than it is to the present day.

I hoped to go to Ireland and England for this year's international Japanese translators' conference, but I couldn't quite afford it.

56. 10. But only 9 of them still exist.
In order...

USA
Canada
UK
Netherlands
West Germany (at the time)
East Germany (at the time)
Austria
Switzerland
France
Italy

So, that's 10. 9 of which still exist. I really have to hit Mexico soon---it's so close to where I live now.
